The European Ombudsman investigates complaints against EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies.
Each year, the European Ombudsman offers one-year paid traineeships to university or higher education graduates with a keen interest in the European Union project and, in particular, in how EU institutions and their administration relate to citizens.

Internships are available in Brussels and Strasbourg from 1 September.
Internships 2026
The Ombudsman offers internships in:
- Case management
- Digital communication
- Internships for persons with disabilities
Requirements:
- Be a citizen of an EU Member State or a candidate or accession country.
- Not have had a paid internship/work contract (lasting more than 8 weeks/2 consecutive months) in any European institution (including MEPs’ offices).
- Have a thorough knowledge of one EU language, a very good knowledge of another and a sound knowledge of English.
Specific requirements
- Case management: Bachelor’s degree or diploma of 3 years or more in law, political science, European studies or public administration.
- Digital communication: Bachelor’s degree or diploma of 3 years or more in communication, journalism or media design (with an emphasis on online media/digital marketing).
- Internships for persons with disabilities: University degree or third-year student (or equivalent) in higher education. Documentation of disability (in an EU language) is required (e.g. document from a national or regional authority, EU disability card or recent medical certificate).
Monthly grant: Trainees receive a monthly grant during the internship period.
Deadlines:
– 13 March 2026, 13:00 CET (for internships in case management and digital communication)
– 31 March 2026, 13:00 CET (for traineeships for persons with disabilities).
