12-month (renewable until 48 months) doctoral research grant. To begin by January 2026. The selected candidate will develop a doctoral thesis under the supervision of Dr. Arturo Zoffmann Rodriguez, within the scope of the STEXEU project (ERC StG), which investigates the history of states of exception in Europe between 1900 and 1939 and their impact on democracy. This scholarship holder will be responsible for the Italian case, focusing on the crisis of the liberal monarchy and the rise and/or consolidation of fascism in the period 1900-1939, employing the methodology of political and social history and carrying out systematic archival work with primary sources. Nevertheless, they will have the freedom to determine the specific approach and chronology of the thesis. The fellow is also expected to be actively and continuously involved in the project’s activities, fully integrating into the STEXEU team and the activities of the Institute of Contemporary History’s Advanced Studies Platform.
Researcher Profile
Master in Social Sciences and Humanities.
Preferred requirements:
1. Specialization in History or a related field in the Social Sciences;
2. Experience in political and social history, with a particular focus on Italy or Southern Europe;
3. Motivation to work in a dynamic team of historians;
4. Fluency in written English and ability to read Italian, or motivation to learn it;
5. Research experience in archives with primary sources.

The monthly pay would be at Masters level in Portugal: €1.309,64.
