There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in organic synthesis/medicinal chemistry at the Department of Chemistry. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The position is funded by University of Bergen.

The subject area for the position is synthetic organic chemistry/medicinal chemistry. The aim of the project is to synthesize compounds with antimicrobial activity that can decompose under light into fragments that do not have antimicrobial activity. The project is a continuation of earlier work based on compounds containing our ethanolamine and oxazolidine chemistry. Method development and chemical analysis will also be a central part of the project to, among other things, map photochemical degradation products.

Requirements

Applicants must hold:

  • A master’s degree or equivalent education in organic synthesis/medicinal chemistry. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 31.07.2025. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • Experience from the use of modern analytical instrumentation, including running and interpretation of NMR-spectra (including two- dimensional NMR-techniques) is a requirement.
  • Experience from multi step synthesis is an advantage.
  • Experience from organometallic reactions is an advantage.
  • Experience from conducting synthesis under dry conditions is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.
