The position is part of the EU-funded project “Small4Good”, which aims to develop multifunctional forest management for small forest owners in Europe. They are now seeking a PhD candidate to work at the intersection of new digital tools, operational solutions, and small-scale forest management, contributing to the implementation of multifunctional forest management in line with the ambitions of the EU Forest Strategy.
The position is a 3 years position affiliated with the Department of Forest operations and Digitalization, within the Division of Forest and Forest Resources and is located at NIBIO’s headquarters in Ås, 30 km south of Oslo.
Duties
- Development and testing of digital solutions for small forest owners. These solutions include Computer vision models and a digital assistant based on a large language model (LLM).
- Development of new business models and MRV methods, where digital tools support the implementation of payments for ecosystem services.
- Development of new operational solutions tailored to small forest owners and supported by emerging digital services.
Requirements
- The applicant must hold a master’s degree in forestry.
- We are seeking a candidate with a solid understanding and background in forest management, as well as strong technical skills (programming) and experience with some forms of machine learning. The candidate should be interested in working at the intersection of technical digital solutions (AI) and forest management and should have good knowledge of operational forestry techniques.
- The applicant must meet the requirements defined for admission to the PhD program at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), including 120 ECTS credits as part of the master’s thesis.
- To be eligible, you must not have previously been employed as a PhD candidate at NIBIO.
- The applicant must be fluent in English, both spoken and written.
- If you do not have skills in Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish at level A2 upon employment, the institution will offer free Norwegian language training with the goal of achieving language skills at at least this level.

The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale as PhD candidate code1017, NOK 551.000 – 605.000. (46721,44 – 51300,32 €) per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
