PhD – Ancient History and Classical Archaeology – Ireland

The School of Classics at University College Dublin invites applications for a fully funded, four-year Ad Astra PhD studentship in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology, supervised by Dr Matthew Evans.

The School of Classics welcomes PhD proposals that focus on the history and archaeology of the Greek world during the Hellenistic and Roman periods (ca. late fourth century BCE to fourth century CE). Projects that address one or more of the following themes are especially encouraged:

•    Digital Humanities approaches, especially Machine Learning, to Greek epigraphy and archaeology
•    Human mobility and migration, and/or the movement of resources, ideas, and material culture
•    The transition between the Hellenistic and Roman periods, including processes of political, social, and cultural change

Projects focusing on mainland Greece, the Aegean islands, and/or Asia Minor are particularly encouraged, though proposals concerning other regions of the ancient Greek world will also be considered.

The successful candidate will have a strong academic background in Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology, and/or Art History, and will be expected to have completed a Master’s degree in one of these fields before the start of the studentship.

Start date: 1st September 2026.

Requirements

  •  Strong academic background in Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology, and/or Art History, including a Master’s degree in one of these fields, completed before the start of the studentship.
  • Experience undertaking and completing independent research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proof of English language proficiency, if English is not the applicant’s first language (this may not be necessary for applicants who already hold a degree from an English-speaking institution, or have lived/worked in an English-speaking country).

Benefits

The award is open to both EU and non-EU candidates, and includes a full tuition fee waiver, annual stipend of €25,000, and up to €4,000 of annual research funds.
