The EU last September 17 proposed a new strategic agenda to take bilateral relations with India to the next level. The European Commission and the High Representative have adopted a joint Communication outlining a “New EU-India Strategic Agenda”, marking a significant milestone in relations between the two partners. This initiative, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in her Political Guidelines for 2024-2029, aims to deepen, broaden and better coordinate bilateral cooperation, enhance the prosperity and security of both partners and help address key global challenges.
President von der Leyen said: “The time has come to focus on reliable partners and to focus on partnerships based on shared interests and guided by common values. With our new EU-India strategy, we are taking our relationship to the next level. We will boost trade, investment and talent mobility. We will strengthen our joint economic security. We will boost clean transition and innovation together. We will deepen our defence industrial cooperation. Europe is already India’s largest trading partner and we are committed to conclude our free trade agreement by the end of the year. Europe is open for business. And we are ready to invest in our shared future with India.
On the basis of the proposals outlined in the Joint Communication, the EU stands ready to work with India to develop a joint comprehensive strategic agenda driven by shared priorities and delivering mutual benefits.
