The Commission is stepping up its efforts in the field of the European bioeconomy

Inicio » Noticias UE » Medio Ambiente » The Commission is stepping up its efforts in the field of the European bioeconomy

12 de June de 2026

The European Commission is stepping up the implementation of the EU Bioeconomy Strategyby launching three complementary initiatives.

These include the Bio-based Alliance (BEA) to support market expansion, the Bioeconomy Investment Deployment Group (BIDG) to improve access to finance, and the Bioeconomy Expert Group to support implementation by Member States.

Call for alliance members

In this context, a new call for expressions of interest in joining the BEA was launched today (10 June). Its aim is to address the value chain bottlenecks that prevent companies from scaling up production and achieving full commercialisation of bio-based materials and products.

This initiative responds to a long-standing challenge facing the European biotechnology sector. Whilst significant public and private investment has supported research, innovation and demonstration activities, many promising companies in the biotechnology sector continue to struggle to reach the commercial phase.

As a result, innovative European start-ups are often acquired by non-European investors before reaching full industrial scale-up, resulting in a loss of economic value and strategic know-how for Europe.

With the mission of mobilising €10 billion in purchase commitments from companies by 2030, the Alliance will connect producers of bio-based materials, products and technologies with major European buyers, helping to create the predictable demand signals needed to unlock investment and bring innovative solutions to commercial scale.

The BEA will become a powerful tool for European strategic autonomy by promoting ‘Made in the EU’ products. Furthermore, it offers buyers high visibility as leaders in the development of the bio-based industry.

Interested organisations are invited to express their interest in becoming founding members of the Alliance ahead of its official launch, which will take place on 20 and 21 October 2026 during theWorld Bioeconomy Summit in Dublin, Ireland.

Submitting an expression of interest does not guarantee membership of the European Bio-based Products Alliance. Formal invitations will be sent following a review process.

First meetings of the BIDG and the expert group.

The Working Group on Bioeconomy Investment Deploymentis holding its first meeting today, marking the start of a new joint initiative by the European Circular Bio-based Economy Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and the Commission to strengthen funding for bio-based industries in Europe.

The group brings together commercial banks, national promotional banks, venture capital funds and institutional investors to raise awareness within the financial sector of the opportunities offered by the bioeconomy and to mobilise public and private investment to scale up bio-based industries.

In parallel, the Commission has set up aBioeconomy Expert Groupto support the implementation of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy.

The group will serve as a key platform for Member States to assist the Commission in implementing the Strategy, receive updates on bioeconomy-related activities, contribute to the monitoring of progress by Member States, and support the development of national and regional bioeconomy strategies.

Representatives from industry and civil society will participate as observers, ensuring a wide range of perspectives. The Expert Group’s first meeting will take place on 12 June in Brussels.
