On 12 January, the European Commission launched a call for data to shape the European Ocean Law, which is expected to be adopted in 2026. This initiative underscores the EU’s commitment to developing cohesive maritime governance and sustainable use of ocean resources. The call will remain open until 9 February 2026 and is open to stakeholders, experts and citizens from across Europe.
The European Ocean Law will improve the coherence and effective implementation of maritime governance in the EU. It will serve as a reference point for bringing together all the economic, climate, environmental and social objectives adopted at Union level to protect and sustainably use ocean resources and services.
Key features of the Ocean Law include improving maritime spatial planning on the basis of a review of maritime spatial planning legislation; structuring the governance and coordination of the European Ocean Observation System; streamlining reporting obligations; and reducing the administrative burden in EU ocean policies.
As a next step in the preparation of the European Oceans Act, the Commission will launch a public consultation in spring 2026. The act is expected to be adopted by the end of 2026, as announced in the Commission’s work programme.
