The European Commission has approved the inclusion of ‘Olive taggiasche liguri’ and ‘Carne Salada del Trentino’ from Italy in the Register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and ‘Tharsys’ from Spain as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
The Protected Geographical Indication ‘Olive taggiasche liguri’ refers to table olives and olive paste or pâté made from olives of the ‘taggiasca’ variety. The Taggiasca olive takes its name from the town of Taggia, where the first trees were planted by Benedictine monks in the 10th century. The plant is characterised by great fertility and strong growth, but is sensitive to frost and extreme temperatures. It has been able to acclimatise to Liguria, which is arc-shaped with the open side facing south and occupies a narrow strip of land between the sea and a mountain range that protects it to the north from winds and low temperatures.
Carne Salata del Trentino’ is a cured meat product made from beef, characterised by a firm, compact texture, a mature meat flavour and a slightly spicy aroma. The meat is produced and packaged throughout the administrative territory of the Autonomous Province of Trento, with the exception of a few municipalities. The traditional practice of processing and preserving ‘Carne Salata del Trentino’ has survived in Trentino since ancient Rome, whereas it has been almost completely abandoned elsewhere.
Thirdly, ‘Tharsys’ is a red, white and rosé wine from the municipality of Requena (Valencia). The origin of the Tharsys enclave dates back to the 16th century, when it was already a well-known place for its vine, with vineyards and an old cellar dug into the rock. Each wine has different aromas depending on its age and colour, ranging from intense notes of blue flowers for the young reds to the smoky and toasted spice aromas of the barrel-aged rosés.
This new appellation joins the more than 3 680 protected designations already listed in the eAmbrosia database. For more information, please consult the quality policy pages.
