The European Commission today announced additional humanitarian aid of €10 million to help people in Lebanon affected by the current escalation of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.
This emergency funding aims to address the most urgent needs, such as food aid, shelter, health care and protection. The EU stands ready to provide further support by mobilising all available emergency response instruments, in particular through the use of the Civil Protection Mechanism.
In 2024, the EU has provided €74 million in humanitarian aid to assist vulnerable populations in Lebanon, including this allocation.
The conflict has led to the displacement of populations in Lebanon from areas bordering Israel, with the latest figures estimating at least 90,530 newly displaced persons in the country, in addition to the nearly 112,000 displaced since October 2023. Already hundreds of civilians have been killed and wounded..
Background
People in Lebanon, including refugees, were already experiencing high levels of poverty and food insecurity, while having limited access to services.
Almost two million Lebanese and Syrian refugees are estimated to be food insecure. This number is expected to increase further.
Since 2011, the EU has allocated more than €941 million in humanitarian aid to respond to the urgent needs of both the Lebanese and refugee population.
As the situation worsened for the Lebanese population in general, especially since 2019, EU humanitarian aid is being provided to the most needy Syrians and Lebanese.
