1 January 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the accession of Spain and Portugal to the European Union.
Both countries have enriched the EU culturally, politically and economically. Their accession has offered European citizens more trade and travel opportunities, reinforced solidarity between peoples and strengthened our Union internationally, boosting our links with partner countries in Latin America, Africa and the Mediterranean.
Since 1986, Spain and Portugal have seen their real GDP double and more than eleven million jobs created, with a substantial increase in exports to the rest of the continent thanks to their integration into the single market. 91% of Portuguese and 76% of Spaniards agree that their countries have benefited from EU membership.
The two countries have also brought many benefits to the EU and other Europeans, from contributions to research and innovation to high quality agri-food and fisheries products. They are at the forefront of civil protection and humanitarian aid actions, reinforcing our role as a major donor. Thanks to them, many young Europeans have the opportunity to travel and study. Spain has been the top Erasmus destination, hosting almost 680 000 students and teachers between 2021 and 2024.
Spain and Portugal have made a decisive contribution to the great progress of the EU over the last 40 years, ensuring that citizens enjoy more rights, better health and greater freedoms.
