On 4 July, the Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, was in Cairo, Egypt, where she took part in the 10th Summit of Speakers of Parliaments of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (UPM). The Summit brings together elected representatives and senior officials from the Euro-Mediterranean region and reaffirms the commitment to strengthening dialogue and cooperation across the Mediterranean.
Commissioner Šuica will seek to boost regional cooperation, encourage youth participation and support the implementation ofthe Pact for the Mediterranean. On the sidelines of the Assembly, she will meet with the new acting Secretary-General of the PA-UfM, Fadi Hajali. The Summit will mark the formal handover of the PA-UfM Presidency from Egypt to the European Parliament, following a successful year under the Egyptian presidency.
The mission is taking place at a key moment in EU-Egypt relations, following the success of the 11th EU-Egypt Association Council. On 15 June, it will help to maintain the positive political momentum and drive forward the implementation of theComprehensive and Strategic Partnership.
Following the meeting with the Egyptian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, Commissioner Šuica held a press conference which can be viewed on EBS. This meeting provides an opportunity to take stock of progress made on key bilateral priorities, such as investment, migration, regional cooperation and the Pact for the Mediterranean, whilst reiterating the importance the EU attaches to human rights, inclusive development and ongoing reforms.
On Sunday, Commissioner Šuica took part in the Anna Lindh Foundation’s Youth Conference, ‘Mediterranean Youth in Action’. The event will highlight young people’s involvement in policy-making in the region. Commissioner Šuica will reiterateher commitment to including young people’s voices in the Pact for the Mediterranean, in particular through the creation of a Youth Parliamentary Assembly, a flagship initiative of the Pact.
During the visit, Commissioner Šuica also met with Chief Commissioner Dr Ali Shaath of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a transitional body established in January 2026 under the Gaza Peace Plan, to discuss ongoing cooperation on the early recovery of Gaza.
