The University of Antwerp is a young, dynamic and progressive university. It combines the assets of its historical roots with its ambition to contribute positively to society. The University of Antwerp believes in active pluralism. In that spirit, it encourages critical research and teaching, reflection and debate on scientific, social, philosophical and ethical issues. Internationalisation is one of the keywords in its mission statement. It is no coincidence that the University of Antwerp is a partner in the Young Universities for the Future of Europe network.
A vacancy is available for a qualified organic chemist with a strong interest in medicinal chemistry, motivated to contribute to the fight against cancer and interested in pursuing a PhD in collaboration between the University of Antwerp (BEL), the SCK CEN research centre (BEL) and the National University of Córdoba (ARG). The experimental work will be carried out at the University of Antwerp and at SCK CEN.
This PhD project focuses on the development of small radiotheranostic molecules targeting carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), a protein that is highly expressed in hypoxic tumours and virtually absent in healthy tissues. CAIX represents a promising target for expanding precision oncology strategies beyond existing treatments. The work will consist of the design and synthesis of selective ligands for CAIX, using molecular modelling and advanced organic synthesis, which will then be conjugated with chelators for radiolabelling with ¹⁷⁷Lu or ¹⁶¹Tb. The ultimate goal is to develop innovative new radiotheranostic agents for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Requirements:
- A master’s degree (or equivalent) in the field of chemistry with experience in organic chemistry is required.
- High level of English.
- Strong interest in medicinal chemistry.
- Proven skills in organic synthesis.
Advantages:
- Offers an exciting opportunity to apply advanced organic synthesis and molecular design to the development of next-generation radiotheranostics.
