To mark the 40th anniversary of Spain’s accession to the European Union (EU), this training initiative aims to use this milestone to take stock of these past decades and, above all, to identify the challenges facing Andalusia within the EU in the coming years. It is not simply a matter of looking back at the past, but of drawing on it to analyse Andalusia’s position within the Union and consider what its role might be in the future.
Date: 13–16 July 2026
Format: Face-to-face
Venue: La Rábida headquarters of the International University of Andalusia
Duration: 25 teaching hours
The course will therefore be divided into two parts: in the first, we will analyse Andalusia’s history within the EU, and in the second, we will focus on the future challenges facing Andalusia within the EU.
Part I – Andalusia’s trajectory within the EU
- Institutional participation: to provide the perspectives of individuals from Andalusia who have held key roles within the EU and in representing Andalusia at the EU level.
- European funds: to take stock of their contribution to the transformation of Andalusia, particularly in relation to changes in cities and municipalities, and agriculture.
- European values: citizenship and the rule of law. The aim is to highlight that membership of the Union enhances the quality of our democracy, the legal protection of citizens and the strength of our institutions.
- Social impact, highlighting specific initiatives such as the Alentejo-Algarve-Andalusia Euroregion and the Guadiana Eurocity, as well as the Erasmus Programme and the EU Ambassador Schools.
Part II – Future challenges for Andalusia within the EU.
- Competitiveness: improving the Andalusian economy’s ability to compete in the European and global markets, analysing the EU’s developments in this area (the Letta and Draghi reports) and the opportunities for Andalusian businesses.
- Andalusia as an external border of the EU, with particular emphasis on the challenge posed by migration flows.
- Relations with Latin America: being in La Rábida, we cannot overlook the EU’s relations with Latin America, particularly following recent events in Venezuela and the trade agreement with Mercosur.
- Environment: the urgent must not overshadow the important, as it remains necessary to consider how to mitigate climate change, how to develop sustainable tourism and agriculture, explore the potential of the circular economy in Andalusia, and highlight the region’s green energy hub.
The course structure is based on the academic format of lectures and round-table discussions, but will also include out-of-classroom activities to visit the EuroCity of Guadiana.
