The EU-funded NEMO project is developing solutions for batteries that are safer, longer-lasting and more efficient.

In a world where enhanced battery performance and safety are becoming more and more urgent, current battery management systems fall short of the mark. Enter the NEMO project, launched in 2023 to redefine the state of the art in battery management. NEMO is promoting physics-based, data-driven and other fusion models and estimators to demonstrate higher-performance, longer-lasting and safer batteries. Through innovative software and hardware solutions, it aims to offer a powerful tool for better battery performance and longevity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) sensor boards will be integrated with the cell management system, making it possible to embed the developed algorithms and validate them with prototype systems. “The solutions will pave the way for novel and more robust performance, lifetime and safety models,” comments project coordinator and Vrije Universiteit Brussel professor Md Sazzad Hosen.

Developing the first prototype

Almost halfway through the project, NEMO researchers have already developed the hardware and software to demonstrate their first module prototype. Following functional testing, the first lab measurement of the prototype integrating cell-level EIS boards will soon be available. “This is an important step forward to achieving NEMO goals,” states Hosen. The project team is also studying the selected cell for advanced model development work in terms of performance, ageing and safety. Earlier this year, NEMO joined BRIDGE, a European Commission initiative launched to address common challenges and facilitate knowledge sharing among EU-funded smart grid, energy storage, islands and digitalisation projects. As a new member, the project took part in the BRIDGE General Assembly held in Brussels in April 2024, and it is also featured in the initiative’s 2024 Brochure. NEMO (NExt-generation MOdels for advanced battery electronics) intends to continue evaluating the first prototype’s performance while working on advancements in the modelling work. The solutions will considerably extend battery life and make battery systems safer for long-term operation. “NEMO will address the battery’s first life and beyond, ensuring better performance under use, extending the lifetime via proper monitoring and predictive maintenance, and guaranteeing reliability with physics-informed sensor measurement,” concludes the coordinator.
