The III Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias Award for the best doctoral thesis on European Union Law, organised by the Spanish Association for the Study of European Law (AEDEUR), was held in Madrid on 26 May.
The event was held as part of the 5th Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias Seminar of the European Community Law Review, which brought together leading specialists in EU law to reflect on the Values and Principles in European Union Law.
In this edition, the jury – chaired by Professor Concepción Escobar Hernández, and made up of Professors Víctor Ferreres Comella and Francisco Pertíñez Vílchez – agreed to award the prize to Dr. Dorina C. Suciu Gavriloaie, assistant professor at the University of Almeria in the area of Public International Law, for her thesis entitled “The legal framework for investments in the new generation of trade and investment agreements of the European Union”.
The thesis, defended at the University of Almería, was supervised by Professor Eva Díez Peralta and Professor Manuel López Escudero. The work was recognised for its analytical depth, its clarity of exposition and its valuable contribution to the study of the role of the European Union in the configuration of a new legal framework for international investment.
With this award, the AEDEUR not only promotes research excellence in European Union Law, but also pays tribute to the memory of Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias, a distinguished Spanish jurist and the first Spanish President of the Court of Justice of the European Union. His brilliant career, characterised by a deep commitment to justice, exemplary intellectual rigour and a firm Europeanist conviction, established him as one of the most influential figures in European law in Spain. His legacy remains today an inescapable reference and constant inspiration for new generations of jurists dedicated to the study and development of EU law.
