The International Research Institute for Disaster Science (IRIDeS) was established at Tohoku University after the catastrophic Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of 2011. IRIDeS brings together the knowledge of Tohoku University and conducts state-of-the-art research on natural hazards, disasters and disaster risk reduction, aiming to contribute to ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts in disaster-affected areas and to be a global centre for disaster science in cooperation with research organisations in many countries. Based on the lessons from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku, IRIDeS is making efforts to change paradigms in disaster risk reduction to cope with catastrophic disasters caused by natural hazards. To this end, IRIDeS is developing practical research on disaster risk reduction that proposes solutions for disaster risk reduction and is contributing to sustainable and resilient societies both in Japan and abroad.
Job Duties
This research field establishes advanced technologies for disaster risk assessment and prediction with the aim of creating a sustainable and resilient society. The position will focus on the development of technologies for complex disaster risk assessment, real-time damage prediction, efficient visualisation of disaster impacts and probabilistic risk assessment considering uncertainties in natural hazards, exposure and vulnerability, by introducing advanced approaches such as digital twins and data-driven sciences. This position will also promote basic and practical research for the societal implementation of technologies developed in collaboration with various fields of disaster science. The position is expected to contribute to education in the department of civil and environmental engineering.
