Resumen:La enfermedad de Alzheimer, el cáncer de mama y el cáncer de próstata figuran entre las enfermedades no transmisibles más frecuentes en Europa y en el mundo. La demencia, incluida la enfermedad de Alzheimer, representa la séptima causa de muerte, con unos 10 millones de personas afectadas en Europa. El cáncer de mama y el de próstata fueron, respectivamente, el primer y el tercer tipo de cáncer más diagnosticado en 2020 en Europa3. En los últimos 20 años, la Unión Europea (UE) ha realizado considerables inversiones en investigación biomédica, incluyendo los campos de la enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA), el cáncer de mama (CB) y el cáncer de próstata (CP). Esto ha apoyado una amplia cartera de diferentes estudios que han mejorado nuestra comprensión de estas enfermedades, incluyendo la investigación básica sobre los mecanismos de la enfermedad, el diagnóstico, el desarrollo de medicamentos, la reutilización de medicamentos, los ensayos clínicos, la prevención y la telemedicina, entre otros.
Summary:Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer and prostate cancer are among the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in Europe and worldwide. Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, represents the seventh leading cause of death, with about 10 million people affected in Europe. Breast cancer and prostate cancer were respectively the first and the third most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in 2020 in Europe3. Over the past 20 years, the European Union (EU) has made considerable investments in biomedical research, including the fields of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), breast cancer (BC) and prostate cancer (PC). This has supported a large portfolio of different studies which have enhanced our understanding of these diseases, including basic research on disease mechanisms, diagnostics, drug development, drug repurposing, clinical trials, prevention and telemedicine, among others.
