The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called for the creation of an international alliance to strengthen and expand ocean monitoring and observation. This alliance will support OceanEye, the European ocean observation initiative, to consolidate efforts and collaboration in ocean observation on a global scale.
President von der Leyen also announced an EU contribution to the international alliance of €50 million from the Horizon Europe programme for the period 2026-2027.
The European ocean observation initiative was first announced by President von der Leyen, together with the Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the European Ocean Days, President Ursula von der Leyen said: “Today we have launched OceanEye, an important initiative to strengthen the EU’s leadership in ocean observation and to harness the full potential of our ocean. We will promote scientific knowledge, boost the competitiveness of the blue economy, improve maritime safety and provide essential protection for the ocean. Together with international partners, we will strengthen a sustainable and resilient global ocean observation system.”
