Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President responsible for the Promotion of our European way of life, will visit the Canary Islands in view of the migratory challenges facing the archipelago. He will meet the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo Battle. The Vice-President will travel tomorrow to Tenerife, where he will visit, together with President Clavijo Batlle, a reception centre for unaccompanied minors. On Thursday he will visit a reception centre in El Hierro.
Vice-President Schinas ‘ visit aims to show solidarity with the people of Spain and the Canary Islands and to confirm the EU’s continued support in managing migration. This visit provides an opportunity to discuss how the European Union can continue to support the Canary Islands and Spain in managing the increase in irregular arrivals, both in financial and operational terms, and by fostering a stronger dialogue with key partner countries.
The Commission supports Spain and the Canary Islands in operational and financial terms, in particular as regards the development of reception structures, as well as through the support of the EU Asylum Agency and Frontex. In addition, the Commission provides comprehensive support to the Canary Islands and Spain in the framework of the EU Action Plan for the Western Mediterranean and Atlantic routes, as well as through intensified dialogue and cooperation on migration with partner countries along these routes.
