Job Duties
The School of Journalism and Media Studies in the College of Professional and Fine Arts at San Diego State University is now accepting applications for its part-time faculty pool.
We welcome applications from prospective temporary faculty to teach across the undergraduate curriculum in the following majors:
-Publicity, including skills- and theory-based courses
-Media Studies, including principles of media studies, media technology and society, and creative uses of emerging media
-Journalism, including skills- and theory-based classes
-Public Relations, including public relations writing (including digital/social media), principles of public relations, and applied research in public relations
Temporary appointments may be full- or part-time. Part-time pool appointments are often made just before the start of the academic term, so applicants should be available on very short notice. The fall term begins in mid-August and ends in late December; the spring term begins in mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities to teach during summer sessions may also be available. Initial appointments are typically for one semester or one academic year, and will be renewed based on satisfactory evaluations and job availability. Applications will remain in our database for the academic year in which they are applied.
Requirements
Candidates must have a master’s degree in journalism, mass communication, or a related field, or have extensive professional experience. Priority will be given to those with university teaching experience, experience in individualized instruction or in a relevant communications and media-related field, and at least five years of full-time professional experience.
Criteria:
- Master’s degree in journalism, advertising, public relations, strategic communications, or related media fields, or bachelor’s degree in one of those fields with substantial industry experience.
- Previous university teaching experience in journalism, advertising, public relations, or media studies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the media industry, evidenced by professional experience, recent teaching experience, or an up-to-date portfolio.
Benefits
The starting rank and salary for lecturer professors are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new appointments are hired at the rank of Professor A or B and are placed at the beginning of the rank.
As of July 2023, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
Professor A: $5,007 – $6,359
Professor B: $5,925 – $12,594
Professor C: $6,500 – $13,831
Professor D: $8,184 – $14,487
