The European Commission is consulting citizens, including fans, sportsmen and sportswomen, coaches, trainers, instructors, volunteers, athletes and sports organisations, before presenting a policy communication entitled “A strategic vision for sport in Europe: reinforcing the European model of sport”.
The Communication will emphasise the importance of sport as a public good in Europe, and participation in this process will be possible over a 12-week period through a consultation and a call for evidence, available now on the “Tell us what you think” portal.
This Communication will highlight the crucial role of sport in Europe as a common good, underlining its impact on public health, education, social inclusion, European unity and economic competitiveness. As the European model of sport faces a number of challenges, public participation will be essential to create a framework to address these challenges and to preserve, promote and strengthen the European model of sport.
The relevance and importance of sport for Europe is demonstrated by numerous initiatives at all levels. The “European Week of Sport” and the “European Sport Forum” are two flagship initiatives, while the “HealthyLifestyle4All” initiative focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles across all age groups and social strata. Together, they integrate sport and active lifestyles with health, nutrition and related policies.
Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Equity, Youth, Culture and Sport, said: “This public consultation will help us in our next steps to protect and reinforce the integrity of the European sport model. Our model is rooted in strong, community-based clubs, grassroots initiatives and local sporting communities. Nothing unites us more than sport, and this consultation will give European citizens another opportunity to share their views on what the future of European sport should look like”.
