If someone calls you a name you reply, \u201cIt takes one to know one\u201d or \u201cyou are worse than me\u201d. That is, accuse them of the very charge they made against you. This rhetorical tactic is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychological_projection#cite_note-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">projection<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a way to shift blame for their own destructive actions.<\/p>\n<p>In his\u00a0<a class=\"broken_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1tv.ru\/news\/2022-02-24\/421583-vladimir_putin_ob_yavil_o_nachale_spetsialnoy_voennoy_operatsii_v_svyazi_s_situatsiey_v_donbasse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">speech<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0aired 24 February announcing the invasion of Ukraine (aka \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/what-he-said-and-what-it-really-means\/\">special operation<\/a>\u201d), Putin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/what-he-said-and-what-it-really-means\/\">dished out<\/a>\u00a0several whoppers of lies. He claimed that the \u201climited military operation\u201d aimed to ensure the \u201cdefence of Donbas\u201d and the \u201cself-defence of Russia\u201d, although Ukraine has never threatened anyone, let alone Russia. He claimed that the \u201coperation\u201d would involve \u201cno occupation\u201d, although Russian soldiers in Ukraine are now establishing just such an occupation in parts of the east and south. Putin outlined \u201cholding elections for a new government\u201d; any fair elections, however, would likely return an overwhelming majority deeply hostile to Russia, if only because Putin\u2019s invasion overthrew a government that was democratically elected in 2019 with over 73 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>On 16 March, Putin gave a long\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7FyFkAyqn4Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">speech<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>, throwing verbal attacks and wild allegations: the \u201cNeo-Nazis\u201d in Kyiv preparing chemical attack, biological weapons, anthrax, even soon to have nuclear weapons ready against Donbas and Russia. Needless to say, none of the allegations were backed up by a shade of evidence, as it is usually the case for the most insolent disinformation tropes.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Going Nazi\u2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One claim stood out both on 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0February and on 16 March, however. Putin promised that, following victory, his forces would carry out the \u201cde-Nazification\u201d of Ukraine. The implication was that the current government \u2013 headed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/24\/world\/europe\/volodomyr-zelensky-ukraine-jewish-president.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a Jewish President<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/ukraine-politics\/in-israel-zelensky-tells-own-familys-holocaust-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">three uncles<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who died in the Holocaust \u2013 is wholly or partly Nazi.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that the Kremlin has used the term \u201cNazi\u201d to describe Ukrainian authorities. It is not even the fiftieth time. For years, Russian officials and state media outlets have used the term to smear and demonise Ukraine and its government. Just in the past few weeks and months, Russian outlets\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/the-west-rewards-the-ukrainian-apologia-for-fascism-with-weapons-and-money\">accused<\/a>\u00a0Ukraine of being fascist,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/state-terror-is-now-taking-place-in-ukraine-comparable-to-the-times-of-the-nazi-occupation\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cstate terror\u201d in Ukraine is comparable to the Nazi occupation, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/us-orchestrated-the-bloody-maidan-coup-with-right-wing-and-fascist-forces\">alleged<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cfascist forces\u201d organised Ukraine\u2019s 2014 Maidan Revolution.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What is different now?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Two elements: \u201cNazi\u201d has now become dominant in state outlets. From being merely frequent and directed at selected countries \u2013 Ukraine, the Baltic states, Poland \u2013 it has now become a general obsession. According to RT,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/M_Simonyan\/status\/1501950124146126856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the entire Europe [EU] is generally like Nazis<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>. Secondly, now it also dominates Putin\u2019s vocabulary \u2013 together with other derogatory terms such as \u201cnationalist drug addicts\u201d, \u201cpuppets\u201d, etc. In recent months, even Foreign Minister Lavrov could hardly utter a word about Ukraine without saying \u201cNazi\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On 4 March, when the Russian parliament unanimously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/a-black-day-for-media-and-free-speech-in-russia\/\">rubberstamped<\/a>\u00a0draconic laws curbing free speech and independent media, the \u201cdebate\u201d was filled with the Nazi word. Ostensibly, the entire West is \u201cNazi\u201d because of their support to Kyiv and for this support, 48 countries are now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ria.ru\/20220307\/perechen-1777030742.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">declared<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u201cunfriendly\u201d towards Russia.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Cult of personality\u2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>While Putin blame others for being Nazis, the cult of personality grows at home.<\/p>\n<p>18 March marked the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0year since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/eight-years-on-war-in-ukraine-brings-back-painful-memories-of-crimeas-invasion\/\">illegal annexation<\/a>\u00a0of Crimea. The celebrations in Moscow reached a new climax this year. On that day, Putin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maxseddon\/status\/1504790978749779971?s=20&amp;t=-yC2Rx5NSr86ow9WppdMvQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">spoke<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, where full tribunes could see him standing by the slogan \u201cFor a world without Nazism\u201d. Cynically, he was justifying war again with two most used words to justify the invasion on Ukraine: genocide and Nazism.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 100,000 people participated in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60793319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">concert<span class=\"only_screen_readers\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a>, many of them with banners and slogans: \u201cFor the President\u201d, \u201cFor Russia\u201d \u201cFor Crimea\u201d, \u201cFor Donbas\u201d.
