On Wednesday, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to cease the membership of the Russian Federation in the Council of Europe as from 16 March. The decision was taken based on Parliamentary\u00a0Assembly of the\u00a0Council of\u00a0Europe\u00a0(PACE)\u00a0unanimous opinion, adopted following Russia\u2019s grave violations of the Council of Europe\u00a0Statute in accordance with the\u00a0due procedures.<\/p>\n

With its unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine, a fellow member State of the Council of Europe, Russia\u00a0violated the fundamental principles of the Council of Europe Statute, the UN Charter and international law.<\/p>\n

We regret that the Russian Federation has failed to heed our calls to cease its military operations in Ukraine immediately and unconditionally.<\/p>\n

As a result of Russia\u2019s behaviour, Russian citizens will no longer benefit from the protections granted by the European Convention on Human Rights nor be able to take cases of\u00a0violation\u00a0of their human rights to the European Court of Human Rights.\u00a0This is highly concerning and yet another restriction of Russian citizens\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n

The European Union expresses its support for human rights defenders, democratic forces, free media and independent civil society in Russia. We urge the Russian Federation to\u00a0rapidly\u00a0return to compliance with human rights, international law and international humanitarian law.<\/p>\n

The Russian Federation is excluded from the Council of Europe<\/h3>\n

In an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, the Committee of Ministers<\/strong>\u00a0decided<\/a>, in the context of the procedure launched under Article 8 of the Statute of the Council of Europe, that the Russian Federation ceases to be a member of the Council of Europe as from today, after 26 years of membership.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
