Cancer research and innovation is one of the European Union&#8217;s top health priorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No one is spared the possibility of cancer, regardless of age. So says Polish EEP MEP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meps\/es\/197542\/JANINA_OCHOJSKA\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Janina Ochojska<\/a>, who is being treated for breast cancer. &#8220;This is something that somehow connects Europe, because together we fight against something that affects us all. No one is excluded from this lottery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Union recorded 1.4 million deaths caused by the disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/sites\/info\/files\/research_and_innovation\/research_by_area\/documents\/esn_-_cancer_infographic_v7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three million new diagnoses<\/a> in 2018 alone. This makes cancer the second leading cause of death, after cardiovascular diseases. In many EU countries, it ranks number one for people aged 45-64. However, innovative treatments and better access to care mean that the life expectancy of many Europeans is lengthening after diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The forecasts of how this disease will evolve are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ep_list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">By 2035, the number of cancer cases could be doubled<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">An estimated 40% of the population will face cancer at some point in their lives<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">There are more than 200 types of cancer<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"ep-wysiwig_heading-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">EU measures to fight cancer<\/h3>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU is investing in various activities such as research projects, clinical trials and training programmes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU also complements member states\u2019 efforts by:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>making it easier to cooperate and share information<\/li>\n<li>adopting legislation to address risk factors (such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/tobacco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tobacco<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/eu-health-policy\/20171023STO86602\/cancer-protecting-people-from-carcinogens-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carcinogens<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/society\/20190117STO23722\/pesticides-in-food-what-is-the-european-parliament-doing-to-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pesticides<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>running awareness rising campaigns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-view1200=\"6\" data-view1020=\"6\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text\">\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">Parliament\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/committees\/en\/beca\/home\/highlights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Special Committee on Beating Cancer<\/a>\u00a0started work in September 2020 and is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-9-2020-0160_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looking at<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Measures for tobacco control, reducing obesity, alcohol use, air pollution etc.<\/li>\n<li>How to support research where a common EU approach is needed<\/li>\n<li>Ways to support non-profit clinical trials<\/li>\n<li>How to facilitate the transparency of treatment prices to improve the affordability and accessibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-view1200=\"6\" data-view1020=\"6\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text\">\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">Marking World Cancer Day, the committee invited health experts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/special-committee-on-beating-cancer_20210204-1345-COMMITTEE-BECA_vd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discuss the impact of Covid-19 and other health threats on cancer care and research<\/a>\u00a0and launched the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/committees\/en\/beca\/covid19-consultation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey for cancer organisations<\/a>\u00a0to prepare better for future crises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h8tlBNiEX2Y\" width=\"1180\" height=\"664\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the role of the Knowledge Centre?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Knowledge Centre on Cancer is an independent knowledge broker providing evidence-based support to policies, while expanding the Commission&#8217;s existing IT systems, gateways, portals, platforms and databases on cancer.
