This event will gather MEPs, prominent Afghan women who were finalists for Parliament\u2019s 2021 Sakharov Prize, Commission and United Nations representatives as well as representatives of other international organisations, to address and cast light on the extremely worrying situation for women in Afghanistan following the Taliban\u2019s return to power last year. The takeover of the country by the Taliban has resulted in women exclusion from government and education and their rights and freedoms are threatened. The international community, including the European Parliament, has called for guarantees for Afghan women and girls. MEPs deplored \u201cthe recent political, military and moral calamity in the country and expressed deep concern about the situation.\u201c They also pushed to tackle the humanitarian crisis. In a resolution from last September the European Parliament called also for special visa programme for Afghan women seeking protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.europarl.europa.eu\/es\/package\/eu-afghanistan_20003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Access the Multimedia Centre to watch the recorded streaming sessions and videos on the Afghan Women Days.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 class=\"ep-p_text\"><strong><span class=\"ep_name\">Women in Afghanistan: Parliament raises concerns<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<div>As the conditions for women continue to deteriorate in Afghanistan, the European Parliament raises awareness about their situation.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" data-view1200=\"8\" data-view1020=\"8\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text\">\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">Afghanistan has long been a concern for the EU. After the withdrawal of US and Nato troops out of the country and the Taliban&#8217;s return to power in August 2021, Parliament called for the evacuation of EU citizens and Afghans at risk and the protection of human rights in the country, in particular women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">The majority of women have been prevented from returning to the workplace, universities and schools. The Taliban do not foresee women participating in leadership roles in Afghanistan and they are using lethal force to disperse women\u2019s rights protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">\u201cFor Afghan women and girls, [the Taliban takeover] means systemic and brutal oppression in all aspects of life,&#8221; said Evelyn Regner, who was chair of the Parliament&#8217;s women&#8217;s rights committee at the time. &#8220;In Taliban-controlled areas, women&#8217;s universities have been closed, they are denying girls access to education and women are sold as sex slaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"ep-wysiwig_heading-2\">The EU and Afghanistan<\/h4>\n<p>The EU is committed to finding ways to best help those on the ground and in exile. Afghan nationals have been among the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/BRIE\/2021\/698776\/EPRS_BRI(2021)698776_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">largest groups of asylum-seekers and refugees hosted on European territory since 2014.<\/a>\u00a0About 600,000 Afghans were internally displaced in 2021 alone and 80% of them were women and children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">EU countries together evacuated 22,000 Afghans, including people such as human rights defenders, women, journalists, civil society activists, police and law enforcement officials, judges and professionals of the justice system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">During a G20 meeting in October 2021, the European Commission announced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.extranet.ep.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/,DanaInfo=ec.europa.eu,SSL+ip_21_5208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support package<\/a> worth \u20ac1 billion for the Afghan people and neighbouring countries, addressing the urgent needs in the country and the region. The EU is also hoping to establish a diplomatic presence on the ground in Kabul. EU foreign affairs ministers agreed that the EU would engage with the Taliban if they respect human rights, in particular women&#8217;s rights, and establish an inclusive and representative transitional government.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"ep-wysiwig_heading-2\">Parliament\u2019s role<\/h4>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">In a statement issued in August 2021,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20210816IPR10101\/afghanistan-statement-of-lead-meps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MEPs urged<\/a>\u00a0authorities in Afghanistan to respect basic human rights and the achievements of the last 20 years in the fields of women\u2019s and girls\u2019 rights, the right of education, health care and social and economic development. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-9-2021-0393_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution adopted in September 2021<\/a>\u00a0on the situation in Afghanistan, Parliament called on the EU and its member states to cooperate on the evacuation of EU citizens and Afghans at risk and establish humanitarian corridors for Afghan refugees seeking protection in neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">MEPs also called for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20210910IPR11906\/meps-call-for-special-visa-programme-for-afghan-women-seeking-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special visa programme for Afghan women<\/a>\u00a0seeking protection. In October 2021, its women&#8217;s rights committee\u00a0 and the delegation for relations with Afghanistan organised a meeting where five Afghan women gave evidence about the situation of women under the Taliban authorities and discussed what they expected from the EU. After the hearing committee chair\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meps\/en\/96998\/EVELYN_REGNER\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evelyn Regner<\/a>\u00a0and delegation chair\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meps\/en\/124766\/PETRAS_AUSTREVICIUS\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Petras Au\u0161trevi\u010dius<\/a>\u00a0issued a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20211031IPR16301\/afghanistan-lead-meps-call-to-prevail-rights-of-afghan-women-and-girls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0stressing the need to raise the issue of the situation of Afghan women and girls in the EU&#8217;s contacts with the Taliban authorities and make it a priority in Parliament&#8217;s activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">In 2021, a group of 11 Afghan women were nominated by the Parliament for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/sakharov-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought<\/a>, to honour their brave fight for equality and human rights.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94633\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94633\" style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20220131PHT22221_original-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-94633\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20220131PHT22221_original-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20220131PHT22221_original-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20220131PHT22221_original-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20220131PHT22221_original-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20220131PHT22221_original-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20220131PHT22221_original-1.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Afghan women hold placards during a demonstration demanding better rights for women in front of the former Ministry of Women Affairs in Kabul on September 19, 2021.
