(less than 18 years old) in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php\/Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>\u00a0were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:At_risk_of_poverty_or_social_exclusion_(AROPE)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at risk of poverty or social exclusion<\/a>\u00a0compared with 21.7% of adults (18\u201364) and 20.4% of older people (65 or over).<\/p>\n<p>Factors influencing the risk of poverty or social exclusion in the EU in 2020 included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>work intensity<\/strong>: 71.9% of the population aged less than 60 years living in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Persons_living_in_households_with_low_work_intensity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very low work intensity<\/a>\u00a0households with dependent children were at risk of poverty;<\/li>\n<li><strong>level of education<\/strong>: 50.5% of children whose parents\u2019 level of education was low were at risk of poverty compared with 7.7% of children whose parents\u2019 level of education was high;<\/li>\n<li><strong>type of household<\/strong>: households composed of a single person with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Dependent_children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dependent children<\/a>\u00a0(42.1%), single-person households (33.2%) and households composed of two adults with three or more dependent children (29.6 %) had the highest risk of poverty or social exclusion;<\/li>\n<li><strong>migrant background<\/strong>: children with at least one parent with a migrant background were at a greater risk of poverty than children whose parents were both native-born (32.9% compared with 15.3%);<\/li>\n<li><strong>living conditions<\/strong>: 14.1% of households composed of a single person with dependent children were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Severe_material_and_social_deprivation_rate_(SMSD)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">severely materially and socially deprived<\/a>\u00a0compared with 7.5% of all households with dependent children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Children most at risk in Romania, least in Slovenia and Czechia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Among the EU countries, Romania recorded the highest rate of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion (41.5%) in 2020, followed by Bulgaria (36.2%), Spain (31.8%) and Greece (31.5%).<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Slovenia (12.1%) and Czechia (12.9%) had the lowest rates, ahead of Denmark (13.5%) and Finland (14.5%).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"piwik_download\"
