The conclusions also set out the EU&#8217;s line of action for the near future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aeropuerto-de-afganistan.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-78557 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aeropuerto-de-afganistan.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aeropuerto-de-afganistan.jpeg 1156w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aeropuerto-de-afganistan-300x189.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aeropuerto-de-afganistan-1024x644.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aeropuerto-de-afganistan-768x483.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The EU recognises that the situation in Afghanistan is a major challenge for the international community as a whole, and stresses the need for\u00a0<strong>strong coordination<\/strong>\u00a0in engaging with relevant\u00a0<strong>international partners<\/strong>, notably the UN.<\/p>\n<p>The EU and its member states&#8217;\u00a0<strong>operational engagement<\/strong>\u00a0will be carefully calibrated to the policy and actions of the Taliban-appointed caretaker cabinet, will not bestow any legitimacy on it, and will be assessed against the\u00a0<strong>five benchmarks<\/strong>\u00a0agreed on by EU ministers of foreign affairs at their informal meeting in Slovenia on 3 September 2021. In this context, the\u00a0<strong>rights of women and girls\u00a0<\/strong>are of particular concern.<\/p>\n<p>A minimal EU\u00a0<strong>presence on the ground in Kabul<\/strong>, dependent on the security situation, would facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and monitoring of the humanitarian situation, and could also coordinate and support the safe, secure and orderly departure of all foreign nationals, and Afghans who wish to leave the country.<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of high priority, the EU will initiate a\u00a0<strong>regional political platform of cooperation with Afghan direct neighbours<\/strong>\u00a0to help prevent the negative spill-over effects in the region, and support the economic resilience and regional economic cooperation, as well as humanitarian and protection needs.<\/p>\n<p>The Council will revert to the matter at its next meeting in October.<\/p>\n<h3>More information<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2021\/09\/21\/afghanistan-council-conclusions-set-out-the-eu-s-position-and-next-steps\/\">European Council &#8211; Press release<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/first-eu-measures-in-response-to-the-afghanistan-crisis\/\">First EU measures in response to the Afghanistan crisis<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Council approved conclusions on Afghanistan emphasising the EU&#8217;s commitment to\u00a0peace and stability\u00a0in the country and to\u00a0supporting the Afghan people.
