In the Slovak Republic, around\u00a010 000 birds are killed by power lines each year. A LIFE award-winning project has come up with some ingenious ways to save these birds from\u00a0perishing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Europe is home to more than 500 wild bird species but around a third of them are in danger of extinction. Adopted in 1979 and revised in 2009, measures under\u00a0the Birds Directive <\/a>are helping protect and enhance all 500 species. And the\u00a0EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 <\/a>aims to halt and reverse the decline of wild species, including birds.<\/p>\n

LIFE ENERGY<\/a>\u00a0has been\u00a0protecting bird populations\u00a0from\u00a0colliding with\u00a0power lines.\u00a0We spoke with project coordinator\u00a0Marek G\u00e1lis from Raptor Protection\u00a0of\u00a0Slovakia for more.<\/p>\n

How did LIFE ENERGY start?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In my country,\u00a080%\u00a0of bird fatalities\u00a0are\u00a0caused by\u00a0electrocution\u00a0and\u00a020%\u00a0after\u00a0collisions.\u00a0Years ago, our\u00a0attention focused on the\u00a0number of\u00a0birds being electrocuted, but we noticed that more species of birds were dying because of crashes.\u00a0This\u00a0had\u00a0never been\u00a0systematically\u00a0studied\u00a0in Slovakia, so we set out to find\u00a0reliable\u00a0data on\u00a0collisions\u00a0and come up with ways to stop\u00a0them from happening.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0did you\u00a0do\u00a0to protect the birds?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Our work <\/a>took\u00a0place in\u00a0Slovakia\u2019s lowlands. This area is\u00a0attractive to\u00a0many\u00a0bird species\u00a0like the Imperial eagle, Great bittern, Roller and Red-footed\u00a0falcon\u00a0as it has a lot of rivers\u00a0and important bird habitats. It\u2019s also\u00a0quite industrial,\u00a0meaning there are\u00a0many power lines.<\/p>\n

We first came up with a\u00a0unique\u00a0method to identify the most dangerous sections.\u00a0This involved\u00a0training\u00a080 field assistants who surveyed 6 235 km of power lines. They\u00a0came up with\u00a065 000 records and\u00a0more than\u00a0140 000 photos. This data\u00a0helped us establish how close the birds were to power lines and which species were dying. Based on this data\u00a0and\u00a0biological\u00a0and landscape information,\u00a0we were able to identify which sections of the lines were most dangerous.<\/p>\n

We developed plans for the energy companies to\u00a0fit\u00a0bird flight diverters on these\u00a0hazardous\u00a0segments. Once installed, we observed what the impact was.<\/p>\n

We also planted a lot of trees\u00a0located\u00a0near dangerous sections. These trees\u00a0are\u00a0higher than the\u00a0electric\u00a0pylons and mean that after the birds fly over the trees, they usually avoid collisions.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0helped\u00a0develop a unique drone\u00a0that can install bird\u00a0flight diverters. And we\u00a0built\u00a040 artificial nests for\u00a0the\u00a0Imperial eagle,\u00a0Common buzzard,\u00a0Eagle owl\u00a0and\u00a0Common kestrel. We\u00a0placed 55 nest boxes\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Saker falcon\u00a0on\u00a0several\u00a0pylons.<\/p>\n

Also, we\u00a0set up rescue\u00a0centres\u00a0and aviaries\u00a0to care\u00a0for the\u00a0injured birds.<\/p>\n

There\u00a0was\u00a0insufficient European ground squirrel for the birds to feed\u00a0on,\u00a0so we boosted their numbers by increasing suitable habitat\u00a0on two sites.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0was the impact?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We observed 42 000 reactions of birds, and the vast majority flew above the pylons.\u00a0About 9 000 diverters were placed on 82 km of the most dangerous power lines\u00a0– they protect 700 birds from collisions every year.<\/p>\n

Around 2 600 injured birds were cared for, with half of them returned to the wild.<\/p>\n

Before\u00a0our project, energy companies\u00a0had to\u00a0install bird flight diverters along whole sections of powerlines. But our method saves them a lot of money as they now only need to cover a fraction of the riskiest areas.<\/p>\n

And many other energy companies are now using our methodology and guidelines, especially when erecting new grids.<\/p>\n

Our approach can be used by other countries\u00a0and can\u00a0protect\u00a0many\u00a0different bird species.<\/p>\n

Finally, we carried out a lot of communications – more people are now aware of the dangers that these birds face.<\/p>\n
