Our experts and staff have made an immense effort to reach this point and applied the highest standards of scientific rigour throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/connect.efsa.europa.eu\/RM\/a0c1v00000HdaQM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public consultation<\/a>\u00a0starting today will run until 30 September and EFSA will hold a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/events\/stakeholders-meeting-draft-scientific-opinion-tolerable-upper-intake-level-dietary-sugars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public meeting<\/a>\u00a0to discuss the draft opinion on 21 September.<\/p>\n<h3>Scientific advice, not policy recommendations or dietary guidelines<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe additional scientific insights and data we get from consultations help strengthen our scientific assessments, so we welcome and encourage them,\u201d said Dr Curtui.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, we stress to our partners and stakeholders that this draft assesses solely scientific evidence and does not constitute future policy recommendations or public health guidelines. Those are the responsibility of national public health authorities and international bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A request from five Nordic countries<\/h3>\n<p>Five European countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) asked EFSA to update a 2010 assessment and to review more recent scientific literature on links between\u00a0<dfn class=\"onomasticon onomasticon-cursor-help\" title=\"The amount of a substance (e.g. nutrient or chemical) that is ingested by a person or animal via the diet. \">intake<\/dfn>\u00a0of sugars and various diseases, e.g. obesity, Type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, gout, dental caries.<\/p>\n<p>Linda Granlund, Director of the Division for Prevention and Public Health, Norwegian Directorate of Health, said: \u201cAs one of the five requester countries, the Norwegian Directorate of Health welcomes EFSA\u2019s public consultation on its draft\u00a0<dfn class=\"onomasticon onomasticon-cursor-help\" title=\"Opinions include risk assessments on general scientific issues, evaluations of an application for the authorisation of a product, substance or claim, or an evaluation of a risk assessment. \">scientific opinion<\/dfn>. We encourage nutrition experts in Norway and beyond to comment on this draft to assist EFSA&#8217;s scientists complete this major review. We will use the extensive scientific findings to update our national\u00a0<dfn class=\"onomasticon onomasticon-cursor-help\" title=\"Science-based recommendations for healthy eating which translate numerical nutrition targets into lay advice on what foods to eat. \">food-based dietary guidelines<\/dfn>\u00a0once the opinion is finalised.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Draft conclusions<\/h3>\n<p>The requester countries specifically asked if it would be possible to set a science-based cut-off point\u2015called a \u2018<dfn class=\"onomasticon onomasticon-cursor-help\" title=\"The maximum intake of substances in food, such as nutrients or contaminants, that can be consumed daily over a lifetime without adverse health effects. \">tolerable upper intake level<\/dfn>\u2019 (UL) for nutrients\u2015for total dietary sugars, below which consumption would not cause health problems. Having screened over 30,000 publications our scientists provisionally concluded it is not possible to set such a\u00a0<dfn class=\"onomasticon onomasticon-cursor-help\" title=\"A dose or exposure below which adverse effects are not detected. \">threshold<\/dfn>. (See our \u2018EFSA explains\u2019 summary for an explanation of this outcome.)<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the opinion confirms, with associated degrees of certainty, various links between the intake of different categories of sugars and the risk of developing chronic metabolic diseases and dental caries.
