This\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">figure\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">below the 2015-2019 target of 130\u202fg\u202fCO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\/km<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">well above the 2020-2024 target of 95\u202fg\u202fCO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\/km<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The results\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">confirm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/data\/co2-cars-emission-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provisional data\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/data\/co2-cars-emission-19\">published last year<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/data\/co2-cars-emission-18\">.<\/a><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the EEA analysis, several reasons have contributed to the increase in average emissions, including the increasing demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and other larger and heavier cars.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Electric vehicles constituted\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">3.5\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">% of new\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ar registrations\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in 2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 600;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emissions from new vans remained stable<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The EEA indicator\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/indicators\/co2-performance-emissions-of-new-vans\/assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0performance of new vans in Europe<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">shows a trend\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">relatively stable or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">slightly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">increasing emissions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In 2019, average emissions of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">new vans\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">158.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">g\u202fCO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\/km<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">which is about 7 % above the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2020 target of 147 g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">CO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\/km<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The share of electric\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/data\/vans-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vans\u00a0<\/a>in r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">egistrations nearly doubled between\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2018 (0.8 \u202f%)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2019 (1.4 \u202f%), but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the vast majority\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(94 %)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of new vans still\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ran on diesel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the EEA indicator shows.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 600;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emission<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0data from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heavy-duty vehicles<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The EEA has also released\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">new\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/data\/co2-emission-hdv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">data<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">set<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0about emissions of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">new\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">heavy-duty vehicles<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, such as buses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and trucks.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The average specific CO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0emissions of all new heavy-duty vehicles registered in the EU\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from 2019 to mid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2020\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stood<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at 5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fCO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\/<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tkm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i.e.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">transport of one tone of goods<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">over one kilometer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The EEA\u2019s 2019-2020 data set a baseline for these vehicles\u2019 emission reductions, with targets to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">15 % lower emission<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in 2025, and 30 % lower emissions in 2030.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Overall, transport e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">missions are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">still\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">about one quarter of the EU\u2019s total greenhouse gas emissions. The European Green Deal calls for a 90 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from transport, compared with 1990 levels.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 600;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">About testing vehicle emissions<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The emissions of new vehicles are systematically tested using \u2018type approval\u2019 procedures. Since 2017, the new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) has been put in place with the objective to gradually replace the outdated New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The WLTP allows to obtain more realistic information on vehicle emissions in the type approval tests. For compliance purpose, NEDC emissions values are used in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 600;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">EEA activities<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The EEA collects and regularly makes available\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/data\/co2-cars-emission-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data on new passenger cars<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/data\/vans-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vans\u00a0<\/a>registered in Europe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in accordance with EU Regulation (EU) No 2019\/631.
