{"id":73756,"date":"2021-06-17T03:00:19","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T01:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=73756"},"modified":"2021-09-07T11:19:10","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T09:19:10","slug":"eu-and-us-take-decisive-step-to-end-aircraft-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-and-us-take-decisive-step-to-end-aircraft-dispute\/","title":{"rendered":"EU and US take decisive step to end aircraft dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis\u00a0<strong>Dombrovskis<\/strong>\u00a0and US Trade Representative Katherine Tai reached an understanding relating to large civil aircraft, transforming almost 17 years of disputes into a forward-looking, collaborative platform to address bilateral issues as well as global challenges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/P034527000602-621235.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73757\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/P034527000602-621235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/P034527000602-621235.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/P034527000602-621235-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both sides will now seek to overcome long-standing differences in order to avoid future litigation and preserve a level playing field between our aircraft manufacturers and will also work to prevent new differences from arising.<\/p>\n<p>The EU and the US also agreed to suspend application of harmful tariffs worth of USD 11.5 billion for a period of five years that hurt companies and people on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides will\u00a0 collaborate on jointly analysing and addressing non-market practices of third parties that may harm our large civil aircraft sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Under the\u00a0Understanding on a cooperative framework for Large Civil Aircraft, the two sides expressed their intention to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>establish a Working Group on Large Civil Aircraft led by each side&#8217;s respective Minister responsible for Trade,<\/li>\n<li>provide financing to large civil aircraft producers on market terms,<\/li>\n<li>provide R&amp;D funding through an open and transparent process and make the results of fully government funded R&amp;D widely available, to the extent permitted by law,<\/li>\n<li>not to provide R&amp;D funding as well as specific support (such as specific tax breaks) to their own producers that would harm the other side,<\/li>\n<li>collaborate on addressing non-market practices of third parties that may harm their respective large civil aircraft industries,<\/li>\n<li>continue to suspend application of their countermeasures, for a period of 5 years, avoiding billions of euros in duties for importers on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The European Union and the United States disputes on Large Civil Aircraft\u00a0(LCA;\u00a0also known as Airbus-Boeing Dispute) is the longest running dispute in the history of the World Trade\u202fOrganisation\u202f (WTO).<\/p>\n<p>It started in\u202f2004,\u202f when\u202fthe US filed a case at the\u202fWTO\u202fagainst the EU, arguing that the bloc was illegally subsidising\u202fthe European\u202fLarge\u202fCivil\u202fAircraft\u202f(LCA)\u202fmanufacturer\u202fAirbus. The EU also filed a complaint against the US in May 2005, for its\u202funlawful\u202fsupport to Boeing.<\/p>\n<p>Following WTO decisions, both the US (in October 2019) and the EU (in November 2020) imposed punitive tariffs on each other&#8217;s exports, affecting in total a value of\u00a0<strong>11.5 billion dollars of trade<\/strong>\u00a0between the two sides.
