Europol supported the takedown with specialist operational analysis and coordinated the cross-border collaborative effort of the countries involved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sicherstellungsbanner_18-12_002.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-64742 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sicherstellungsbanner_18-12_002-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sicherstellungsbanner_18-12_002-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sicherstellungsbanner_18-12_002-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sicherstellungsbanner_18-12_002-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sicherstellungsbanner_18-12_002.jpg 1260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This site had almost 500 000 users, more than\u00a02 400 sellers, over\u00a0320 000 transactions and\u00a0more than\u00a04 650 bitcoin\u00a0and\u00a012 800 monero transferred. At the current rate, this corresponds to a sum of more than\u00a0\u20ac140 million. The vendors on the marketplace mainly traded all kinds of drugs and sold counterfeit money, stolen or counterfeit credit card details, anonymous SIM cards and malware.<\/p>\n<h3>Germany takes the lead<\/h3>\n<p>The Central Criminal Investigation Department in the German city of Oldenburg arrested an Australian citizen who is the alleged operator of DarkMarket near the German-Danish border over the weekend. The investigation, which was led by the cybercrime unit of the Koblenz Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office, allowed officers to locate and close the marketplace, switch off the servers and seize the criminal infrastructure \u2013 more than 20 servers in Moldova and Ukraine supported by the German Federal Criminal Police office (BKA). The stored data will give investigators new leads to further investigate moderators, sellers, and buyers.<\/p>\n<h3>Europol&#8217;s Dark Web Team<\/h3>\n<p>One of Europol&#8217;s initiatives is to create a coordinated law enforcement approach to tackle crime on the dark web. This involves law enforcement agencies from across and outside the EU and other relevant partners and organisations, such as Eurojust.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this goal, Europol\u2019s\u00a0European Cybercrime Centre (EC3)\u00a0has established a dedicated Dark Web Team to work together with EU partners and law enforcement across the globe to reduce the size of this underground illegal economy.<\/p>\n<p>It will deliver a complete, coordinated approach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sharing information;<\/li>\n<li>providing operational support and expertise in different crime areas;<\/li>\n<li>developing tools, tactics and techniques to conduct dark web investigations;<\/li>\n<li>identifying threats and targets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>More information<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/newsroom\/news\/darkmarket-worlds-largest-illegal-dark-web-marketplace-taken-down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europol &#8211; Press Release<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DarkMarket, the world&#8217;s largest illegal marketplace on the dark web, has been taken offline in an international operation involving Germany, Australia, Denmark, Moldova, Ukraine, the United Kingdom (the National Crime Agency), and the USA (DEA, FBI, and IRS).
