However, the number was not included in the monthly total for illegal border crossings into the European Union because it is a preliminary figure.<\/p>\n<p>Nationals from Mali and Morocco accounted for most of the arrivals.<\/p>\n<h3>Central Mediterranean<\/h3>\n<p>The Central Mediterranean saw a 51% drop in illegal border crossings in January compared to a year ago to fewer than 900.<\/p>\n<p>Nationals of Guinea and Ivory Coast were the top two nationalities on this migratory route.<\/p>\n<h3>Western Mediterranean Sea<\/h3>\n<p>There were 600 detections of illegal border crossings in the Western Mediterranean in January, 48% fewer than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Algerians and Moroccans accounted for 90% of all detections on this route this year, while Moroccans were the second most represented nationality.<\/p>\n<h3>Eastern Mediterranean<\/h3>\n<p>According to the most recent data, there were around 750 detections of illegal crossings reported in January on the Eastern Mediterranean route, less than one-fifth of the figure from a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Nationals of Syria, Nigeria and Cameroon accounted for the largest number of detected migrants.<\/p>\n<h3>Western Balkans<\/h3>\n<p>There were nearly 2 200 detections of illegal border crossings on the Western Balkan route last month, down 14% from January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Syrians and Afghans were the top two main nationalities on this migratory route.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IBC_Jan_2021.prop_750x.6f4d9accc5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-63948 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IBC_Jan_2021.prop_750x.6f4d9accc5-300x211.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IBC_Jan_2021.prop_750x.6f4d9accc5-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IBC_Jan_2021.prop_750x.6f4d9accc5.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>More information<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/frontex.europa.eu\/media-centre\/news\/news-release\/situation-at-eu-external-borders-arrivals-down-in-the-mediterranean-2FTL79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frontex &#8211; Press Release<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of illegal border crossings at Europe\u2019s external borders in January fell by nearly half from a year ago to nearly 5 800*, mainly because of lower figures on the migratory routes in the Mediterranean, according to preliminary calculations.
