{"id":57408,"date":"2020-11-26T03:00:40","date_gmt":"2020-11-26T02:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=57408"},"modified":"2020-11-25T14:54:28","modified_gmt":"2020-11-25T13:54:28","slug":"commission-approves-contract-with-moderna-to-ensure-access-to-a-potential-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/commission-approves-contract-with-moderna-to-ensure-access-to-a-potential-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Commission approves contract with Moderna to ensure access to a potential vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The European Commission approved a sixth contract under the EU Vaccines Strategy, this time with the pharmaceutical company Moderna.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/vacuna.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54402\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/vacuna.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/vacuna.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/vacuna-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/vacuna-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/vacuna-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/vacuna-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The contract provides for the initial purchase of 80 million doses on behalf of all EU Member States, plus an option to request up to a further 80 million doses, to be supplied once a vaccine has proven to be safe and effective against COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The contract with Moderna will enlarge the already broad portfolio of vaccines to be produced in Europe, including the contracts signed with <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_1524\">AstraZeneca<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_1680\">Sanofi-GSK<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_1829\">Janssen Pharmaceutica NV<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_2081\">BioNTech-Pfizer<\/a> and the contract approved with <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_2136\">CureVac<\/a>. This diversified vaccines portfolio will ensure Europe is well prepared for vaccination, once the vaccines have been proven to be safe and effective. Member States can also decide to donate the vaccine to lower and middle-income countries or to re-direct it to other European countries.<\/p>\n<p>President of the European Commission, Ursula <strong>von der Leyen<\/strong>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><em>I&#8217;m very happy to announce today&#8217;s agreement with the company Moderna to purchase up to 160 million doses of their future vaccine. This is our sixth contract with a vaccine producer, and we are working on yet another one. We are setting up one of the most comprehensive COVID-19 vaccine portfolios in the world, providing Europeans access to the most promising future vaccines under development so far. A safe and effective vaccine can help us end the pandemic, and return gradually to normal life.<\/em><em>\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moderna is a U.S. based company pioneering the development of a new class of vaccines based on messenger RNA (mRNA) transported into cells by lipid nanoparticles. The vaccine platform has been developed over the last decade.
