{"id":55015,"date":"2020-10-26T03:00:36","date_gmt":"2020-10-26T02:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=55015"},"modified":"2021-11-17T10:13:02","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T09:13:02","slug":"latest-eurobarometer-survey-economic-situation-is-eu-citizens-top-concern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/latest-eurobarometer-survey-economic-situation-is-eu-citizens-top-concern\/","title":{"rendered":"Latest Eurobarometer survey: Economic situation is EU citizens&#8217; top concern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the new Eurobarometer conducted in July and August, concern about the economic situation is reflected in the perception of the current state of the economy.\u00a0<strong>64% of Europeans think that the situation is \u2018bad&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0and 42% of Europeans think that their country&#8217;s economy will recover from the adverse effects of the coronavirus outbreak \u2018in 2023 or later&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/P039092-579012.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/P039092-579012.jpg\" alt=\"Eurobarometer\" width=\"639\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/P039092-579012.jpg 639w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/P039092-579012-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Europeans are divided (45% \u2018satisfied&#8217; vs 44% \u2018not satisfied&#8217;) regarding the measures taken by the EU to fight the pandemic. However,\u00a0<strong>62%<\/strong>\u00a0say they\u00a0<strong>trust the EU to make the right decisions<\/strong>\u00a0in the future, and\u00a0<strong>60%<\/strong>\u00a0remain\u00a0<strong>optimistic about the future<\/strong>\u00a0of the EU.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Trust and image of the EU<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Trust in the European Union<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>has remained stable<\/strong> since autumn 2019 at 43%, despite variations of public perceptions during the pandemic. Trust in national governments and parliaments has increased.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Main concerns at EU<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Citizens mentioned the<strong>\u00a0economic situation<\/strong>\u00a0as<strong>\u00a0the most pressing issue facing the EU<\/strong> &#8211; over one-third of all respondents, a strong increase of 16 percentage points since autumn 2019, and rise from third to first concern. Concern about the economic situation has not been this high since spring 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Europeans are also increasingly concerned about the<strong> state of Member States&#8217; public finances<\/strong>, which moves from fifth to second place on a par with\u00a0<strong>immigration<\/strong> , the latter now being at the lowest level since autumn 2014.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic,\u00a0<strong>health<\/strong>\u00a0 is the \u00a0fourth most mentioned concern at EU level. The issue of the<strong>\u00a0environment and climate change<\/strong>\u00a0has lost ground, down 8 percentage points to 20%, followed by\u00a0<strong>unemployment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the\u00a0<strong>economic situation<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>has overtaken health as the most important issue at national level<\/strong>, rising from seventh to first position. Although in second position, health has had a notable increase in mentions since autumn 2019, taking it to its highest ever level over the past six years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unemployment<\/strong> has also increased considerably in importance , followed by rising prices\/<strong>inflation<\/strong>\/cost of living, the <strong>environment<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>climate change<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>government debt<\/strong>. Mentions of\u00a0<strong>immigration<\/strong>, are at their lowest level for the past six years.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The current economic situation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Since autumn 2019, the proportion of Europeans who think that the current situation of their national economy is \u2018good&#8217;\u00a0 has declined considerably, while the <strong>proportion of respondents who judge this situation to be \u2018bad&#8217; has increased sharply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The coronavirus pandemic and public opinion in the EU<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Europeans are\u00a0<strong>divided on the measures taken by the EU institutions<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>to fight the coronavirus outbreak<\/strong>. However,\u00a0<strong>a majority of respondents in 19 Member States<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>is satisfied with the measures taken by the European Union institutions to fight the coronavirus pandemic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0<strong>more than six Europeans in ten trust the EU to make the right decisions<\/strong> in the future.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key policy areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Asked about the objectives of the European<strong>\u00a0Green Deal<\/strong>,\u00a0Europeans continue identifying \u2018<strong>developing renewable energy<\/strong>&#8216; and \u2018fighting against<strong>\u00a0plastic waste\u00a0<\/strong>and leading on the issue of\u00a0<strong>single-use of plastic&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>as the\u00a0<strong>top priorities<\/strong>. More than one third think the top priority should be supporting EU farmers or promoting the circular economy. Just over three in ten think reducing energy consumption should be the top priority.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>EU citizenship and European democracy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>A majority\u00a0<\/strong>of people in 26 EU Member States (except Italy) and 70% across the EU\u00a0<strong>feel that they are citizens of the EU<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A majority of Europeans\u00a0<\/strong>(53%) say they are<strong>\u00a0satisfied with the way democracy works in the EU<\/strong>. The proportion of respondents who are \u2018not satisfied&#8217; has increased, by 3 percentage points since autumn 2019 to 43%.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Optimism for the future of the EU<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Finally, in this troubled period<strong>, 60%<\/strong>\u00a0of Europeans say they<strong>\u00a0are optimistic about the future of the EU<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>More information<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/es\/ip_20_1975\">Press release.
