{"id":51684,"date":"2020-09-09T03:00:16","date_gmt":"2020-09-09T01:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=51684"},"modified":"2021-11-17T11:22:03","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T10:22:03","slug":"covid-19-evolution-in-europe-may-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/covid-19-evolution-in-europe-may-july\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Evolution in Europe: May-July 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This document collects and analyzes data on the evolution of COVID-19, collected by <strong>Johns Hopkins University<\/strong> and published daily by the <strong>European Documentation Center of Almer\u00eda<\/strong> during the months of May, June and July 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>COVID-19: Europe Overview<\/h2>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683898\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683898\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h3>Evolution of confirmed cases Europe<\/h3>\n<p>At the end of May, the European continent registered a total of <strong>2,130,259<\/strong> people infected by COVID-19. During the month of June this figure increased by <strong>27.46%<\/strong> to <strong>2,715,382<\/strong> people. During the month of July, the number of infected people increased again by <strong>21.84%<\/strong> with respect to June, reaching a total of <strong>3,308,506<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Evolution of deaths in Europe<\/h3>\n<p>The number of deaths recorded in Europe during the month of May reached <strong>176,535<\/strong>. This terrible figure amounted to <strong>197,363<\/strong> deaths at the end of June, an increase of <strong>11.8%<\/strong> compared to those recorded in May. Unfortunately, in July this figure continued to rise, reaching <strong>210,882<\/strong> deaths at the end of the month which represented an increase of <strong>6.85%<\/strong> over the previous month.<\/p>\n<h3>Evolution of recovered people in Europe<\/h3>\n<p>Europe had a total of <strong>1,057,188<\/strong> people recovered from COVID-19 at the end of May. This number increased during June by <strong>45.72%<\/strong> reaching a total of <strong>1,540,571<\/strong> people recovered. At the end of July, Europe had <strong>1,938,285<\/strong> people recovered from COVID-19, an increase of <strong>25.82%<\/strong> of this figure compared to the previous month.<\/p>\n<h3>Most affected countries in Europe<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3684069\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3684069\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>As of July 31, 2020, the countries with the most documented cases were <strong>Russia<\/strong> with <strong>827,509<\/strong> cases, accounting for <strong>25.01%<\/strong> of all cases in Europe; the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> with <strong>303,063<\/strong> cases, accounting for <strong>9.16%<\/strong> of the European total; <strong>Spain<\/strong> with <strong>282,641<\/strong> cases, representing <strong>8.54%<\/strong> of all cases in Europe; and <strong>Italy<\/strong> with <strong>246.776<\/strong> cases accounted for <strong>7.46%<\/strong> of all cases in Europe; <strong>Turkey<\/strong> with <strong>227,982<\/strong> confirmed cases corresponding to <strong>6.89%<\/strong> of all cases in Europe; <strong>France<\/strong> with <strong>221,077<\/strong> confirmed cases corresponding to <strong>6.68%<\/strong> of all European cases; and <strong>Germany<\/strong> with <strong>180,328<\/strong> cases corresponding to <strong>6.3%<\/strong> of all European cases.<\/p>\n<p>However, if we look at the number of inhabitants, the countries with the most infected are <strong>San Marino<\/strong> (with <strong>2,202<\/strong> cases per 100,000 inhabitants), <strong>Vatican City<\/strong> (1,513), <strong>Armenia<\/strong> (1162), <strong>Andorra<\/strong> (1076), <strong>Luxembourg<\/strong> (<strong>1,043<\/strong>) and Sweden (<strong>790<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The countries that have registered the least number of infections up to July are <strong>Vatican City<\/strong> (<strong>12 cases<\/strong>), <strong>Liechtenstein<\/strong> (<strong>87<\/strong>), <strong>Monaco<\/strong> (<strong>117<\/strong>), <strong>San Marino<\/strong> (669), <strong>Malta<\/strong> (720) and <strong>Andorra<\/strong> (918). However, if we again look at the number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants, the countries least affected by the pandemic to date would be <strong>Georgia<\/strong> (26), <strong>Slovakia<\/strong> (41), <strong>Greece<\/strong> (41), <strong>Hungary<\/strong> (46), <strong>Latvia<\/strong> (64) and <strong>Uzbekistan<\/strong> (69).<\/p>\n<h3>Deceased by Covid-19 in Europe<\/h3>\n<p>As for the lethality of the disease caused by the virus, those countries that have so far recorded the highest number of fatalities are the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> (<strong>46,046<\/strong>), <strong>Italy<\/strong> (<strong>32,785<\/strong>), <strong>France<\/strong> (<strong>35,129<\/strong>), <strong>Spain<\/strong> (<strong>28,411<\/strong>) <strong>Russia<\/strong> (<strong>13,650<\/strong>), <strong>Belgium<\/strong> (<strong>9,836<\/strong>) and <strong>Germany<\/strong> (<strong>9,135<\/strong>). Taking into account the number of inhabitants of each country, the countries where the virus has shown a higher lethality are San Marino (<strong>132<\/strong> deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) <strong>Belgium<\/strong> (84) <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> (<strong>67<\/strong>), Andorra (<strong>60<\/strong>), <strong>Spain<\/strong> (<strong>60<\/strong>), <strong>Italy<\/strong> (<strong>54<\/strong>) and <strong>Sweden<\/strong> (<strong>56<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The countries that have fortunately recorded the lowest number of deaths are <strong>Vatican City<\/strong>, <strong>Liechtenstein<\/strong> (<strong>1<\/strong>), <strong>Monaco<\/strong> (<strong>4<\/strong>), <strong>Malta<\/strong> (<strong>9<\/strong>) <strong>Iceland<\/strong> (<strong>10<\/strong>) and <strong>Georgia<\/strong> (16). If we take into consideration the number of inhabitants of each country, the countries with fewer deaths caused by the virus are <strong>Vatican City<\/strong>, <strong>Georgia<\/strong> (<strong>less than 1<\/strong> death per 100,000 inhabitants), <strong>Uzbekistan<\/strong> (less than <strong>1<\/strong> death per 100,000 inhabitants), <strong>Slovakia<\/strong> (<strong>less than 1<\/strong> death per 100,000 inhabitants), <strong>Cyprus<\/strong> (<strong>1.5<\/strong>) and <strong>Latvia<\/strong> (<strong>1.64<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<h2>Quarterly evolution of the countries with more confirmed cases<\/h2>\n<p>The following is an analysis of the evolution registered during the months of May, June and July 2020 of the total cases, deaths and people recovered in those European countries that registered a greater number of confirmed cases at the end of July.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Russia<\/strong>, which in May counted a total of <strong>379,051<\/strong> cases, suffered an increase of <strong>68%<\/strong> of confirmed cases, reaching <strong>640,246<\/strong> cases at the end of June. This figure increased during July by <strong>29%<\/strong> more than in June, reaching <strong>827,509<\/strong> cases at the end of July.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3684036\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3684036\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/3684036\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3684036\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/3675394\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3675394\/embed\" aria-label=\"\">With regard to deaths, <strong>Russia<\/strong> recorded a total of <strong>4,142<\/strong> deaths by COVID-19 at the end of May. This figure rose by <strong>120%<\/strong> during the month of June, reaching <strong>9,152<\/strong> deaths. At the end of July, Russia had a total of <strong>13,650<\/strong> deaths, which represented an increase of <strong>49.14%<\/strong> over June.<\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/3675394\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3675394\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><\/div>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/3675394\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3675394\/embed\" aria-label=\"\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683966\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683966\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h5>United Kingdom<\/h5>\n<p>The <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong>, which in May had a total of <strong>270,508<\/strong> confirmed cases, experienced an increase in June of <strong>15%<\/strong> compared to May, reaching <strong>313,470<\/strong> infections. In the month of July this figure remained stable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3684030\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3684030\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The number of deaths in the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> at the end of May was <strong>37,919<\/strong>, a figure that grew by <strong>15.13%<\/strong> during June, reaching <strong>43,659<\/strong> deaths due to COVID-19. In July the number of deaths in the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> continued rising by <strong>5.46%<\/strong> compared to June, reaching <strong>46,046<\/strong> deaths at the end of July.<\/p>\n<div data-src=\"visualisation\/3676881\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3676881\/embed\" aria-label=\"\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683958\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683958\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h5><strong>Spain<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Spain<\/strong> reported <strong>237,906<\/strong> cases at the end of May and maintained a slight increase of<strong> 4.6%<\/strong> during the month of June with respect to May, reaching <strong>248,970<\/strong> people infected; this figure kept growing during July by <strong>13.52%<\/strong> up to <strong>282,641<\/strong> people infected.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3684028\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3684028\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The number of deaths in <strong>Spain<\/strong> was <strong>27,119<\/strong> at the end of May. During the month of June, this figure rose further, reaching <strong>28,346<\/strong> deaths at the end of that month. Fortunately this increase was much lower in July, as the total number rose by only <strong>0.86%<\/strong> compared to June, reaching <strong>28,411<\/strong> deaths.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683956\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683956\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h5><strong>Italy<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Italy<\/strong>, which had <strong>231,732<\/strong> infections at the end of May, kept this figure stable with small increases of <strong>3.75%<\/strong> in June and <strong>2.63%<\/strong> in July, for a total of <strong>246,776<\/strong> cases at the end of July.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3684022\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3684022\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Regarding fatalities, in Italy, at the end of May the number of deaths caused by COVID-19 was <strong>33,142<\/strong>. This number went up during the month of June to <strong>34,744<\/strong> deaths, an increase of <strong>4.83%<\/strong> over the previous month. By the end of July the number of deaths had increased by <strong>1.1%<\/strong> over June, reaching <strong>35,129<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683946\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683946\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h5><strong>Turkey<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Turkey<\/strong>, with <strong>160,979<\/strong> reported cases at the end of May, suffered an additional <strong>23.37%<\/strong> increase in the number of cases in June, reaching a total of <strong>198,613<\/strong> by the end of June. In July this figure climbed again by <strong>14.79%<\/strong>, reaching <strong>227,982<\/strong> infected people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683979\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683979\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>At the end of May, <strong>Turkey<\/strong> recorded a total of <strong>4,461<\/strong> deaths caused by COVID-19, this figure increased by <strong>14.66%<\/strong> during the month of June, reaching a total of <strong>5,115<\/strong> deaths. Later, during July, the number of deaths continued to rise, reaching <strong>5,649<\/strong> at the end of July, <strong>10.43%<\/strong> more than in June.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683942\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683942\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h5><strong>France<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>France<\/strong>, for its part, registered a total of <strong>186,364<\/strong> infected people at the end of May. In June, this figure increased by <strong>8.13%<\/strong>, reaching <strong>201,522<\/strong> people infected by the end of that month. The figure rose again by <strong>9.7%<\/strong> during July, with a total of <strong>221,077<\/strong> people infected.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3684002\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3684002\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>In <strong>France<\/strong>, the total number of deaths at the end of May was <strong>28,665<\/strong>. This figure grew with respect to the month of May by <strong>4.02%<\/strong> in June, reaching <strong>29,816<\/strong> deaths. In July this increase was reduced to <strong>1.38%<\/strong>, reaching <strong>30,226<\/strong> deaths.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683938\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683938\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h5>Germany<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Germany<\/strong> had a total of <strong>182,196<\/strong> infections at the end of May. This number increased by <strong>7.05%<\/strong> during June, reaching a total of <strong>195,042<\/strong> by the end of that month. By the end of July, the number of infections continued to rise, reaching <strong>208,546<\/strong>, an increase of <strong>6.92%<\/strong> over the previous month.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/3683992\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/3683992\/embed\" aria-label=\"\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>At the end of May, <strong>Germany<\/strong> recorded a total of <strong>8,470<\/strong> deaths. This number augmented by <strong>5.98%<\/strong> during the month of June, reaching <strong>8,976<\/strong> deaths at the end of this month.
