To prepare for the risk of forest fires during the upcoming summer, the EU is further reinforcing its European fleet of firefighting aircraft under the rescEU system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The EU is financing purchases by the Swedish government of 2 new firefighting airplanes to add to the reserve. This adds up to a total of 13 airplanes and 6 helicopters that will be part of the rescEU fleet in 2020 and funded by the EU.<\/p>\n

rescEU Firefighting capacities
\n<\/em><\/h3>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The EU is funding seven EU Member States for pooling their airplanes and helicopters in the 2020 rescEU firefighting fleet, readily deployable to other countries in times of need.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The rescEU firefighting reserve consists of 2 firefighting airplanes from\u00a0Croatia,\u00a0<\/strong>2 firefighting airplanes from\u00a0Cyprus,\u00a0<\/strong>1 firefighting airplane from\u00a0France,\u00a0<\/strong>2 firefighting airplanes from\u00a0Greece,\u00a0<\/strong>2 firefighting airplanes from\u00a0Italy,\u00a0<\/strong>2 firefighting airplanes from\u00a0Spain,\u00a0<\/strong>2 firefighting airplanes and 6 firefighting helicopters from\u00a0Sweden.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Preparatory and monitoring measures<\/h3>\n

The European Commission will continue in monitoring and coordinating to prepare for this year’s forest fire season.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The ERCC will monitor fires as they develop and maintainclose contactwith the authorities of the affected country.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 National and European monitoring services and tools such as the\u00a0European Forest Fire Information System<\/a>\u00a0(EFFIS) provide an overview of European data from national forest fire programmes.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Regular meetings with EU Member States and Participating States to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism ahead of and during the season to exchange information on their state of preparedness and fire risks.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The EU’s\u00a0Copernicus<\/a>\u00a0emergency satellite mapping service can be activated to map forest fires.<\/p>\n
