Use biogenic gaseous carbon to increase feedstock availability for the industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some sections of the industry are seeking to create a <strong>low-carbon emission economy<\/strong> by avoiding or reducing <strong>fossil-based carbon emissions<\/strong> or capturing these emissions for storage or use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Gases.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15040 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Gases-300x185.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Gases-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Gases-768x474.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Gases.png 955w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bio-based industry can demonstrate efficient recycling and recovery concepts for its biogenic gaseous emissions. Turning biogenic emissions into something of value by producing valuable chemicals contributes to the industry\u2019s \u2018zero-waste\u2019 biorefining objectives and abates climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Biogenic gaseous carbon can be used<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>as a feedstock for the conversion into platform chemicals;<\/li>\n<li>to increase the growth of biomass as feedstock for industrial exploitation; or<\/li>\n<li>to create energy solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>specific challenge<\/strong>\u00a0is to use biogenic gaseous carbon as a feedstock for the bio-based industry through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>direct conversion into bio-based chemicals or intermediates; or<\/li>\n<li>growing new biomass sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"topicdescriptionkind\">Scope<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Demonstrate the conversion of biogenic gaseous carbon into chemicals or intermediates for: further processing into value-added applications; or using to grow new biomass.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible gaseous feedstocks within the scope of this topic are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>C1-carbon emissions from biorefineries or any other bio-based operation, including anaerobic fermentation processes (e.g. in brewing and bioethanol production) and hydrothermal liquefaction and gasification of biogenic feedstock;<\/li>\n<li>and CH4 (methane) and CO2 from biogas or syngas plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is considered that proposals requesting a maximum contribution of EUR 7 million would be able to address this specific challenge appropriately. However, this does not preclude the submission and selection of proposals requesting other amounts.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"topicdescriptionkind\">Expected Impact<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>EXPECTED IMPACTS LINKED TO BBI JU KPIS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>contribute to\u00a0<strong>KPI 1<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 create at least one new cross-sector interconnection in the bio-based economy;<\/li>\n<li>contribute to\u00a0<strong>KPI 2<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 create at least one new bio-based value chain;<\/li>\n<li>contribute to\u00a0<strong>KPI 6<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 demonstrate at least one new consumer product based on bio-based chemicals and materials that meet market requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduce greenhouse gas (GHG; including CO2) emissions (expressed in CO2 equivalents) by at least 20% through the capture and use of the biogenic gaseous carbon from the value chain being addressed;<\/li>\n<li>help replace fossil-based products with bio-derived GHG-based alternatives; or prevent the use of fossil-based feedstock by introducing new bio-based products for needed applications for which there is no fossil-based counterpart;<\/li>\n<li>contribute to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/policies\/strategies\/2050_en\">EU\u2019s 2050 long-term strategy for a climate-neutral Europe\u00a0<\/a>by replacing fossil-based material by using biogenic emissions as raw materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ECONOMIC IMPACTS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>diversify the incomes of the bio-based sector(s) from which the targeted gaseous emissions originate;<\/li>\n<li>produce at least one B2B or B2C GHG-based product in sufficient quantities to allow validating the value chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SOCIAL IMPACTS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>create new job opportunities in the bio-based sector in rural, coastal and\/or urban areas;<\/li>\n<li>increase the competitiveness of European biomass producers and the bio-based industry by increasing: (i) feedstock and energy efficiency; (ii) business growth; and (iii) investment, while ensuring environmental sustainability and an increase in local biodiversity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Deadline<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">03 September 2020 17:00:00 Brussels time<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>More information<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/funding-tenders\/opportunities\/portal\/screen\/opportunities\/topic-details\/bbi-2020-so1-d2;freeTextSearchKeyword=BBI;typeCodes=1;statusCodes=31094502;programCode=H2020;programDivisionCode=null;focusAreaCode=null;crossCuttingPriorityCode=null;callCode=Default;sortQuery=openingDate;orderBy=asc;onlyTenders=false;topicListKey=topicSearchTablePageState\">Call<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some sections of the industry are seeking to create a low-carbon emission economy by avoiding or reducing fossil-based carbon emissions or capturing these emissions for storage or use.
