While some countries are now starting the gradual lifting of confinement restrictions, life as we knew it before remains largely on hold\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/live-work-travel-eu\/health\/coronavirus-response\/european-roadmap-lifting-coronavirus-containment-measures_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for the time being.<\/a>\u00a0Schools, day care centres and universities are still\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eacea.ec.europa.eu\/national-policies\/eurydice\/content\/how-covid-19-affecting-schools-europe_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heavily affected<\/a>, and will be re-opening only very gradually over the coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n<h3>Alternative teaching practices<\/h3>\n<p>With schools closed across Europe, teachers have had to develop alternative teaching practices often with very limited training in distance education. They have frequently been doing this in addition to responding to the needs of their own families and children. Parents of school-aged children, on the other hand, have suddenly had to balance their work or telework arrangements with efforts to support their children\u2019s home schooling activities.<\/p>\n<p>In the best cases, teachers have managed to cooperate with colleagues and parents to ensure the continuity of their students\u2019 learning and development. However,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2020\/apr\/24\/italy-home-schooling-coronavirus-lockdown-what-weve-learned?CMP=fb_gu&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Facebook&amp;fbclid=IwAR3APXBuvljKyXzGlrw-ZLfyZ-L2oEwp8vqXPuZC_00kNpWs23lhtwyxFR8#Echobox=1587721011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some teachers struggle<\/a> with IT, with keeping up their students\u2019 motivation and engagement levels, or with assessing achievement and progress.<\/p>\n<p>Some European governments have taken immediate steps to ensure support to the most disadvantaged families. <strong>In Spain, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/boe\/dias\/2020\/03\/13\/pdfs\/BOE-A-2020-3580.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently adopted law<\/a>\u00a0stipulates that families with children receiving school meals are entitled to financial aid or the direct provision of food during school closures.<\/strong> The Dutch government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sivon.nl\/actueel\/persbericht-6-800-leerlingen-kunnen-weer-lessen-volgen-dankzij-laptops-via-sivon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">allocated 2.5 million euros to buy laptops<\/a>\u00a0for students in general and vocational education who lack proper equipment at home. In Portugal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtp.pt\/play\/estudoemcasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a national TV channel<\/a>\u00a0is broadcasting classes in several subjects for all compulsory school age students, targeting in particular those without any access to the internet and\/or computers. Specific guidance issued by the Department for Education and Skills in Ireland provides concrete advice and resources for schools and teachers to support students in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.ie\/en\/Schools-Colleges\/Information\/National-Emergencies-Public-Health-Issues\/guidance-support-pupils-at-risk-primary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">primary\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.ie\/en\/Schools-Colleges\/Information\/National-Emergencies-Public-Health-Issues\/guidance-support-pupils-at-risk-post-primary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post-primary<\/a>\u00a0settings who are at risk of educational disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the current situation, some teachers have also been reporting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/why-are-some-kids-thriving-during-remote-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unexpected improvements in some of their students\u2019 school work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic has also highlighted the critical role played by parents in supporting students\u2019 learning and development. Establishing clear communication between schools and parents, with simple guidelines on learning objectives and outcomes has been critical in ensuring that parents can help their children without anyone feeling overburdened.<\/p>\n<p>As schools gradually re-open the health and safety of students and all school staff is paramount, and a number of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/key-messages-and-actions-for-covid-19-prevention-and-control-in-schools-march-2020.pdf?sfvrsn=baf81d52_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">basic principles<\/a>\u00a0need to be applied to help stop the spread of the virus.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/news\/back-school-preparing-and-managing-reopening-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consultation, communication and coordination<\/a>\u00a0to reassure parents of the safety of schools and to maintain their support for educational activities will remain crucial. Health needs must also include mental health and well-being, which will continue to pose challenges for students and staff alike beyond the period of confinement.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tes.com\/news\/third-teachers-have-covid-19-mental-health-fears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Surveys of teachers during the current pandemic<\/a>\u00a0show that many are experiencing heightened levels of stress and anxiety related to school closures, online learning and the uncertainties surrounding the return to school.
