There is currently <strong>no evidence that food is a likely source or route of transmission of the virus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Coronavirus.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-38005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Coronavirus-300x175.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Coronavirus-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Coronavirus-768x447.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Coronavirus.png 895w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)<\/strong> has said that while animals in China were the likely source of the initial infection, the virus is spreading from person to person \u2013 mainly\u202fvia\u202frespiratory droplets that people sneeze, cough, or exhale. More information on coronavirus and food can be found in this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfr.bund.de\/en\/can_the_new_type_of_coronavirus_be_transmitted_via_food_and_toys_-244090.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FAQ<\/a>\u00a0by the BfR, Germany\u2019s risk assessment body.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists and authorities across the world are monitoring the spread of the virus and there have not been any reports of transmission through food. For this reason, EFSA is not currently involved in the response to the COVID-19 outbreaks. However, we are monitoring the scientific literature for new and relevant information.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding food safety, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued precautionary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommendations<\/a>\u00a0including advice on following good hygiene practices during food handling and preparation, such as washing hands, cooking meat thoroughly and avoiding potential cross-contamination between cooked and uncooked foods. More information can be found on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WHO website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"topicH2\">Reducing the chances of contagion<\/h3>\n<p>EFSA is based in Parma, in the north of Italy, which is one of the areas currently subject to emergency restrictions on movement imposed by the Italian government. As of the last week in February, EFSA has adopted a series of\u202fmeasures in line with advice from the Italian authorities.<\/p>\n<p>It, also has introduced <strong>homeworking<\/strong> for most of our staff and telemeetings with experts and partners, while events, staff travel and public visits to EFSA premises have been suspended until at least<strong> 8 April<\/strong>. These measures are being reviewed constantly in light of new information.<\/p>\n<p>Rolling information on the outbreak and risks assessments used by the EU Member States and the European Commission in their response activities are being updated continuously by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdc.europa.eu\/en\">European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control\u202f(ECDC)<\/a>.
