This action is part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/live-work-travel-eu\/health\/coronavirus-response_en\">coordinated EU response<\/a>\u00a0to the public health threat of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"5Normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">With the additional amount from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/en\">Horizon 2020<\/a>\u00a0programme, the Commission is scaling up the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/news\/coronavirus-eu-mobilises-eur10-million-for-research-2020-jan-31_en\">emergency call<\/a>\u00a0launched in January to fight the COVID-19 outbreak to \u20ac47.5 million. This allowed to select 17 projects involving 136 research teams from across the EU and beyond, which will start working on developing vaccines, new treatments, diagnostic tests and medical systems aimed at preventing the spread of the Coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>17 projects on negotiation<\/h3>\n<p>The Commission is currently negotiating grant agreements with the selected beneficiaries. The 17 projects will work on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Development of new\u00a0<strong>vaccines<\/strong>. The research will focus on developing a prophylactic vaccine and a therapeutic vaccine, which will be used for prevention and treatment respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid point-of-care\u00a0<strong>diagnostic tests<\/strong>. Increased efforts will concentrate on enabling front-line health workers to make the diagnosis more quickly and more accurately, which will in turn reduce the risk of further spread of the virus.<\/li>\n<li>New\u00a0<strong>treatments<\/strong>, in which a dual approach will be adopted. Firstly, accelerating the development of new treatments currently in the pipeline (including therapeutic peptides, monoclonal antibodies and broad-spectrum antivirals), and secondly, screening and identifying molecules that could work against the virus, using advanced modelling and computing techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Improving epidemiology and\u00a0<strong>public health<\/strong>, including our preparedness and response to outbreaks. These projects will help develop better\u00a0<strong>monitoring systems<\/strong>\u00a0in order to effectively prevent and control the spread of the virus, as well as contribute to the assessment of social dynamics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"3Titre\"><span class=\"prdnormal\">Background<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"5Normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On 30 January 2020, the Commission launched a special\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/funding-tenders\/opportunities\/portal\/screen\/opportunities\/topic-details\/sc1-phe-coronavirus-2020\">call for expressions of interest<\/a>\u00a0to support research on COVID-19 with an initial budget of \u20ac10 million mobilised from the special fund for emergency research of the Horizon 2020 programme for research and innovation. The Commission received 91 proposals within the very short two-week deadline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"5Normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Furthermore,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/mex_20_379\">up to \u20ac45 million in Horizon 2020 funding<\/a>\u00a0will support additional research through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imi.europa.eu\/\">Innovative Medicines Initiative<\/a>\u00a0(IMI), a public-private partnership between the Commission and the pharmaceutical industry. A commitment of a similar scale is expected from the pharmaceutical industry so that the total investment in the fast-track call\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/news\/covid19-horizon-2020-partly-funding-innovative-medicines-initiative-fast-track-call-2020-mar-03_en\">launched<\/a>\u00a0on 3 March could reach up to \u20ac90 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"5Normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Several EU-funded projects are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/files\/european-commission-research-actions-coronavirus_en\">already contributing<\/a>\u00a0to preparedness and response to the COVID-19 outbreak, such as the European Virus Archive &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/653316\">GLOBAL (EVAg)<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/602525\">PREPARE project<\/a>\u00a0and the Commission involvement in the Global research collaboration for infectious disease preparedness\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/874667\">(GloPID-R)<\/a>\u00a0network.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>More information<\/h3>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_386\">COVID-19: UN releases US$15 million to help vulnerable countries to combat coronavirus<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/now-press-conference-about-coronavirus\/\">Press conference about Coronavirus<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following the publication of a \u20ac10 million call in January, the Commission has secured an additional \u20ac37.5 million for urgently needed research on COVID-19 vaccine development, treatment and diagnostics.
