New biotechnologies to remediate harmful contaminants: Europe-China cooperation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pollutants resulting from human action are detrimental to ecosystems<\/strong> at different functional levels, representing an important economic load for society.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/industry-1752876_1920.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14715 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/industry-1752876_1920-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/industry-1752876_1920-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/industry-1752876_1920-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/industry-1752876_1920-1024x682.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/industry-1752876_1920.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>Specific Challenge<\/h3>\n<p>Environmental pollution is a major global issue affecting natural resources and the environment in generic terms and creating important concerns for human health in particular.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"topicdescriptionkind\">Scope<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Proposals should cover the following activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research and innovation for efficient and low cost remediation strategies using microorganisms by means of emerging biotechnologies that require minimum or zero external energy or chemicals and that reduce the remediation time compared to physicochemical processes.<\/li>\n<li>Work to ensure remediation in soil, sediments, mines, surface water, groundwater or industrial water.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a system to remove different contaminants, including complex mixtures, covering hydrocarbons and their derivatives, recalcitrant compounds, metals, nanomaterials, paints and coatings, nutrients, pharmaceuticals or micropollutants and toxic contaminants.<\/li>\n<li>Include field trials to prove an acceptable performance for field applications will be a plus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This topic is part of the EU-China flagship initiative on Biotechnology for Environment and Human Health, which will promote substantial coordinated and balanced research and innovation cooperation between the EU and China. China-based legal entities\u00a0have to apply for funding under the Chinese co-funding mechanism with the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).<\/p>\n<p>The Commission considers that proposals requesting a contribution from the EU <strong>between EUR 4 and 5 million<\/strong> would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately.
