{"id":34682,"date":"2020-02-05T03:00:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T02:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=34682"},"modified":"2020-02-04T13:04:04","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T12:04:04","slug":"the-number-of-deaths-from-cancer-dicreases-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-number-of-deaths-from-cancer-dicreases-in-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"The number of deaths from cancer dicreases in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The World Cancer Day<\/strong> aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by <strong>raising awareness and education about cancer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/cancer-389921_1920.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14864 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/cancer-389921_1920-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/cancer-389921_1920-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/cancer-389921_1920-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/cancer-389921_1920-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/cancer-389921_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-leads-the-flight-against-breast-cancer\/\">EU leads the fight against breast cancer<\/a>, and having developed an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/imminent-anti-metastatic-vaccine-for-prostate-cancer\/\">Imminent anti-metastatic vaccine for prostate cancer<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/a-minimally-invasive-prognostic-device-for-breast-cancer\/\">minimally-invasive prognostic device for breast cancer<\/a>\u00a0among the others, within the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/society\/20200131STO71517\/world-cancer-day-how-the-eu-is-fighting-cancer\"> EU&#8217;s fight against cancer<\/a>,\u00a0almost 1.2 million persons died from cancer in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php\/Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union<\/a>\u00a0in 2016. Cancer was responsible for over one quarter (26%) of all deaths recorded in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Men (656 100 deaths due to cancer) were more affected than women (511 600). Cancer caused 29% of deaths of men and around 23% of deaths of women in 2016. Fatal cancers caused 288 900 deaths among people younger than 65 years in the EU, corresponding to 37% of all deaths in this age group, while less than one quarter (878 800 deaths, 23%) of all deaths among those aged 65 and above.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Main fatal cancers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Lung cancer claimed 239 000 lives in the EU in 2016, accounting for one fifth (20%) of all deaths due to cancer. Colorectal cancer (139 700 deaths, 12% of all deaths due to cancer), breast cancer (85 300, 7%), pancreatic cancers (78 700, 7%) and prostate cancer (65 200, 6%) were also frequent causes of death.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The main cause of male deaths from cancer was lung cancer, being responsible for one quarter (165 000 deaths, 25%) of all male deaths from cancer. This was far more than colorectal cancer (77 400, 12%) and prostate cancer (65 200, 10%).<\/li>\n<li>In contrast, the type of cancer which caused more death among women in the EU in 2016 was breast cancer (84 300 deaths, 16% of all female deaths due to cancer), lung cancer (74 100, 14%) and colorectal cancer (62 300, 12%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Death rate from cancer in the EU<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Across the European Union, there were 257 deaths from cancer per 100 000 in 2016. With 345 deaths per 100 000 inhabitants, <strong>Hungary recorded the highest age-standardised death rate from cancer<\/strong> among the EU Member States.
