{"id":34500,"date":"2020-02-03T03:00:24","date_gmt":"2020-02-03T02:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=34500"},"modified":"2021-04-22T14:28:41","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T12:28:41","slug":"published-the-new-survey-on-cybercrime-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/published-the-new-survey-on-cybercrime-in-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Published the new survey on cybercrime in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-comission\/\">Commission<\/a> has released its latest survey on <strong>Europeans&#8217; attitudes towards cybercrime.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/security-265130_1920.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29849 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/security-265130_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/security-265130_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/security-265130_1920-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/security-265130_1920-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/security-265130_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commfrontoffice\/publicopinion\/index.cfm\/survey\/getsurveydetail\/instruments\/special\/surveyky\/2249\">results<\/a>\u00a0show that awareness of cybercrime is rising, with 52% of respondents stating they are fairly well or very well informed about cybercrime, up from 46% in 2017. Europeans are however growing less confident about their capacity to stay safe online: 59% of Internet users think they can protect themselves sufficiently against cybercrime, down from 71% in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents worry about misuse of their personal data, fraud, being locked out of their computer and forced to pay ransom to access their own data, as well as about identity theft. More than a third have received fraudulent emails or phone calls asking for personal details in the last three years; 8% fell victim to ransomware, and 11% had their social media account or email account hacked. This has an impact on their willingness to use online services: for example, 10% say their concerns make them less likely to make purchases online.<\/p>\n<h3>EU measures against cybercrime<\/h3>\n<p>Keeping Europeans safe online is a priority for the Commission. The EU has advanced in the fight against cybercrime, with for instance\u00a0stronger rules\u00a0against online payment fraud and better assistance to victims. The EU also helps building up the capacity of law enforcement authorities to tackle cybercrime, with the European Cybercrime Centre at Europol supporting Member States by providing tools, expertise, and coordination of police action. More generally, the EU supports Member States&#8217; cybersecurity preparedness and promotes swift and effective cooperation on cybersecurity issues, through a comprehensive legal framework including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/digital-single-market\/en\/network-and-information-security-nis-directive\">the Directive on security of network and information systems (NIS Directive)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/digital-single-market\/en\/eu-cybersecurity-act\">the EU Cybersecurity Act<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reco\/2017\/1584\/oj\">European Blueprint<\/a> for coordinated response to large-scale cybersecurity incidents and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/MEMO_19_1833\">Recommendation on cybersecurity of 5G networks<\/a>. This legal framework helps foster cooperation among Member States and protect critical infrastructure, businesses and citizens as well as enhance the EU&#8217;s ability to protect itself against attacks by malicious actors and to deal with emerging cybersecurity risks.
