{"id":34475,"date":"2020-02-03T03:00:18","date_gmt":"2020-02-03T02:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=34475"},"modified":"2020-01-31T11:23:11","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T10:23:11","slug":"meps-call-for-measures-to-ensure-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/meps-call-for-measures-to-ensure-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"MEPs call for measures to ensure equality"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" data-view1200=\"6\" data-view1020=\"6\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text ep-layout_chapo\">\n<p>The European Commission must present an ambitious strategy for <strong>gender equality<\/strong>, including binding measures to <strong>reduce the gender pay gap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Igualdad-salarial.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18222 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Igualdad-salarial-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Igualdad-salarial-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Igualdad-salarial-768x370.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Igualdad-salarial.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">MEPs demand binding measures on gender pay gap and pay transparency<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">Enforce principle of equal pay for equal work as enshrined in the treaties (Article 157 of the TFEU)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">16% average gender pay gap in the EU (37% for pensioners)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Resolution<\/h3>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">In the resolution adopted on Thursday by 493 votes in favour, 82 against and 79 abstentions, the Parliament welcomes the commitment of the new Commission President to make<strong> \u2018equal pay for equal work\u2019 the founding principle of the new European Gender Strategy to be presented in March.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">MEPs want this strategy to include binding provisions on pay transparency and on the gender pay gap, applying to both the public and private sector, as well as strong enforcement policies, clear targets and monitoring to better measure progress. They also call for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:52017DC0678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gender Pay Gap Action Plan<\/a>\u00a0to be revised by the end of 2020, which should set clear targets for the member states to reduce the gap over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">To tackle the root causes of the gender pay gap, Parliament urges member states to invest in early childhood education and care services, as well as in family-friendly working arrangements to ensure women\u2019s equal participation in the labour market. Considering the gender pay gap is more than twice as high for pensioners, MEPs also call for adequate provisions for older women such as credits for care periods, adequate minimum pensions and survivor\u2019s benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">Lifelong learning and vocational training for women should ensure they have access to high-quality employment and opportunities.
