During the first plenary session of 2020, Parliament called for more ambitious measures to tackle climate change and to put citizens at the centre of an initiative to reform the EU.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Parliament supported the European Commission’s\u00a0plan for the EU to become climate neutral<\/a>\u00a0by 2050 on Wednesday and called for a higher 2030 emissions reduction target of 55%. The previous day, they discussed a proposal on how to\u00a0finance this green transition<\/a>, including support for regions affected by it.<\/p>\n

Citizens have to be at the core of discussions on how to reform the EU, MEPs said in a resolution adopted on Wednesday, setting out their vision for the\u00a0Conference on the Future of Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On the same day, MEPs adopted a resolution calling to ensure the protection of EU and UK\u00a0citizens\u2019 rights after Brexit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the UN biodiversity conference in China in October, MEPs called for legally binding targets at global and EU level to\u00a0stop biodiversity loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This week, MEPs also discussed\u00a0measures to tackle the gender pay gap<\/a>. A vote on a resolution on this will be held later this month.<\/p>\n

MEPs debated\u00a0the situation in Iran<\/a>\u00a0following recent escalations, while King Abdullah II of Jordan underlined the importance of peace in the Middle East\u00a0during an address<\/a>\u00a0to MEPs.<\/p>\n

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi\u0107 presented\u00a0the priorities of his country’s Council presidency<\/a>\u00a0to Parliament on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Parliament also adopted a resolution criticising the\u00a0worsening situation in Poland and Hungary<\/a>\u00a0regarding the rule of law.<\/p>\n

Parliamentary committees will this week deal with Brexit, a free trade deal with Vietnam and discuss security matters with Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On Thursday the\u00a0constitutional affairs committee<\/a>\u00a0will vote on its recommendation to Parliament on whether it should approve the EU-UK withdrawal agreement.<\/p>\n

The EU-Vietnam free trade and investment protection agreements are up for a vote by the\u00a0international trade committee<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0internal market and consumer protection committee<\/a>\u00a0votes on Thursday on a resolution addressing the challenges arising from the development of artificial intelligence technology, in particular in relation to consumer choice, the use of bias data and the need for EU liability rules to also cover new artificial intelligence-enabled products.<\/p>\n

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will address the\u00a0foreign affairs committee<\/a>, the\u00a0security and defence subcommittee<\/a>\u00a0and the parliamentary delegation to Nato on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

On the same day, the\u00a0budgets committee<\/a>\u00a0will ask budget commissioner Johannes Hahn about the European Commission\u2019s priorities under the next long-term budget and the way it intends to cooperate with the Parliament.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0environment and public health committee<\/a>\u00a0will decide Tuesday whether to call for immediate action against illegal trade in pets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
