Around \u20ac260 million were allocated to these activities from the EU\u00a0budget for the period 2014- 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/satellite-67718_1920.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-32784 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/satellite-67718_1920-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/satellite-67718_1920-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/satellite-67718_1920-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/satellite-67718_1920-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/satellite-67718_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The EU currently has three space programmes: Copernicus, which provides data from earth\u00a0observation satellites; Galileo, a global satellite navigation and positioning system; and EGNOS, a\u00a0European regional satellite-based augmentation system used to improve the performance of global\u00a0navigation satellite systems. Up to the end of 2020, total EU expenditure for the deployment of\u00a0infrastructure and the operation of satellites and ground stations will amount to some \u20ac19 billion. A\u00a0further \u20ac15.5 billion has been proposed by the Commission for the 2021-2027 period.<\/p>\n<p>The EU is not the only provider of space services worldwide. The United States have been pioneers\u00a0in the area of earth observation (Landsat) and they launched the world\u2019s first global satellite\u00a0navigation systems (GPS). China, Russia and other countries also operate global navigation satellite\u00a0systems or satellites providing earth observation data. In view of this, and the large amount of\u00a0public money involved, the Commission has emphasised the need to maximise the use of the\u00a0EU\u2019s space assets and promote a strong user uptake of space services. Wide use of these services\u00a0should also create new jobs, boost technological innovation and productivity, and contribute to<br \/>\nbetter designed policies, for example in the environment and security policy sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the auditors published an Audit Preview on the EU\u2019s space assets and their use.\u00a0Audit Previews provide information on an ongoing audit task.
