The Directive will also be the basis of the work of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/cross-border-cases\/judicial-cooperation\/networks-and-bodies-supporting-judicial-cooperation\/european-public-prosecutors-office_en\">European Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Remarks by the Commissioner<\/h3>\n<p>Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality V\u011bra\u00a0<strong>Jourov\u00e1\u00a0<\/strong>said:\u00a0<em>\u201cTogether with the European Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office, the new rules will better protect the EU budget from fraud.\u00a0 I count on Member States to fully<\/em><em>\u00a0and swiftly<\/em><em>transpose these new rules. T<\/em><em>he European t<\/em><em>axpayers&#8217; money must be duly protected from criminals.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Commission&#8217;s strategy<\/h3>\n<p>The Directive is part of the Commission&#8217;s strategy to strengthen the protection of the EU budget.\u00a0 It will improve the deterrence and effectiveness of the fight against criminals by aligning the Member States&#8217; approaches. The European Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office will play a key role in investigating, prosecuting and enforcing these offences. The new body is currently being set up and should be operational at the end of 2020.
