{"id":19138,"date":"2019-06-07T08:00:31","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T06:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=19138"},"modified":"2019-06-06T10:04:38","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T08:04:38","slug":"the-metals-that-hold-the-key-to-curing-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-metals-that-hold-the-key-to-curing-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"The metals that hold the key to curing cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Spanish institute developed drug candidates containing metals to target cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cura-contra-el-cancer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19132 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cura-contra-el-cancer-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cura-contra-el-cancer-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cura-contra-el-cancer.jpg 687w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Madrid laboratory developed families of drug candidates to treat cancer, using metals like iridium, ruthenium and osmium, during four-year EU-funded project MEMOTUMCELLMACH.<\/p>\n<p>The IMDEA Nanoscience Institute, with support from the Marie Curie programme, says its research on metallodrugs based on iridium shows they could be up to 200 times more effective against cancer cells than cisplatin \u2013 one of the most commonly used drugs for cancer patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now know that the iridium family of drugs is super potent,\u201d says laboratory head Dr. Ana Pizarro. \u201cThey accumulate in the mitochondria or power house of the cancer cell and exclusively so.\u201d The team also developed a family of osmium-based candidates to control pH inside the cancer cell. \u201cThe impact it could have on cancer progression and invasion is scarily good,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Multiple targets<\/h2>\n<p>Scientists discovered the metallodrug cisplatin, which contains an atom of platinum, by chance in the 1960s and is still used in about 50 % of chemotherapy treatments worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>But cisplatin and other drugs on the market don\u2019t work for all types of cancers and sometimes affect healthy cells. \u201cThere is no single cause of cancer, there is no single target, so there is no single magic bullet,\u201d said Dr. Pizarro.<\/p>\n<p>She focused on ways to get the metal compounds to switch \u2018on\u2019 to react and attack cancer cells while remaining inactive outside the cancer cells.
